Clinical Trial Shows That Cbd Could Treat Cannabis Use Disorder

Cannabis use disorder refers to the persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to control cannabis use. Although many people consume cannabis without developing a reliance, it is estimated that around 1 in 10 users get addicted to cannabis. It is generally due to Tetrahydrocannabinol delta-9 (THC), the main addictive component of the drug. The increase in the concentration of this psychoactive compound is often linked to increased cannabis use disorder levels. Over the years, many kinds of research were carried to assess the potential of Cannabidiol (CBD) in treating several medical conditions. Recently, a fascinating study revealed the potential of CBD to prevent addiction and help to treat cannabis use disorder.
• A clinical trial to treat Cannabis Use Disorder
According to a study that was published in The Lancet Psychiatry revealed that CBD might help to increase abstinence from cannabis use. The phase 2a clinical study was carried out at the Clinical Psychopharmacology Unit, University College London. It aimed to identify effective CBD dosages for the treatment ...
... of the disorder. For this purpose, the researchers carried out a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomised, and adaptive Bayesian trial. Here, they measured THC levels in participants' urine and the number of days per week without using cannabis. On measuring the effectiveness of differing CBD doses, they found some positive results. They found that 400mg and 800mg CBD doses were more effective at reducing the usage of cannabis than placebo.
Moreover, both doses were considered safe and well-tolerated among the sample. Some interesting effects of CBD on some physiological and cognitive functions were also found. It proves that CBD can reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, prevent seizures, and aid with a sound sleep.
Likewise, many clinical trials assessing the potential of Cannabidiol (CBD) have become increasingly common in recent years. It was found that CBD can modulate various neuronal circuits involved in drug addiction and reduce dependency on addictive substances. CBD is the second-most dominant cannabinoid found in cannabis, which does not cause users to get high. Unlike THC, it may suppress drug-seeking behaviours by releasing rewarding compounds such as anandamide. Besides providing effective treatment of cannabis use disorder, CBD is used to treat many other medical conditions.
