Visit Manchester City
The words regeneration and Manchester have long gone together. Sicne the catastrophic IRA bomb, the city has become synonymous with the rapid urban regeneration that has typified most major cities in the UK since the early 90s. Nowadays, some even call it the capital of the North.
Add this regeneration to the huge student population, the melting pot of multiculturalism which has a massive foothold in the city and the famous Mancunian cockiness, then you really have one hell of a place on your hands.
And this is what brings the tourists.
Now, it would be totally unfair to say that it was regeneration that put Manchester on the cultural map. Industry did that way back in the 1800s, and when that declined a new reputation was forged through the twin wonders of football and music. In these two regards together, Manchester is almost without international competition.
Think about it, throw in what can almost certainly be called the biggest football team in the world in the form of Man U (plus a pretty damned fine second team in Manchester City) with the city that nurtured Joy Division, Oasis, The Fall, ...
... The Smiths, The Bee Gees, the Happy Mondays, the Stone Roses, Elbow, the Verve and Take That then you have one of the most formidable places in contemporary culture.
The nightlife ties into this too. Any pub when it is match day is a huge experience, and when that is over there are more bars and nightclubs than anyone knows what to do with. The presence of the two universities means that you have a great array of options ? from student cheap to price-out-the-scruffy-students expensive ? so whatever you are willing to pay, there will be something for you.
The best thing about Manchester too is the price. It is set up to cater for all ranges, and im not saying that there are hostels for those wanting to go cheap. Take Octopus Travel for example, they have some very decent city centre Manchester Hotels for as little as ?50 at the weekend.
There has never been a better time to visit. Ironically, the recession has made everything cheaper, for a while, so if you can find some cheap tickets to get there then you really have no excuse. Bonny Kominek is blogged this article about Manchester and advises if you are planning a visit to the city, check out Octopus Travel for an overview of Manchester hotels.
