Tired and frankly a bit thirsty too, I was sitting at a bar near my office and overheard an interesting conversation on the topic of SEO between two guys sitting adjacent to me.

Since I did not know their names, let us just call them “first” and “second” guy. Well, it seems the first guy refurbishes diesel fuel injectors. He had just started his workshop a few months back and had now also paid some Indian company $250 to setup a website. Purpose of the website was to facilitate prospective customers to send defective fuel injectors to him and he would repair them and send them back to the customer. Fees to be paid online. Apparently, brand-new fuel injectors are very expensive.

Problem it seems was that despite the website being online for over a month, he had so far not received even a single query. To which, the second guy who I assume had some IT background, asked “did you do a search engine optimization”. “I need to get the search engine optimized?” asked the first guy.

I realized the term “Digital Marketing” or “SEO” for short, is a bit of a misnomer. “Search Engine Optimization” ...
... or “SEO” actually means optimizing the website to make it search engine friendly and beneficial for your business. Now what the heck does that mean? Allow me to explain.

Search engines, regularly send out something they called “bots” to visit website and ‘index’ them which basically, is an exercise to figure out what the website is all about. Whether it sells any Outsourcing Services or product and if so, what. So, when a user searches for that particular product or service or information, the search engine will list all websites that match the request.

Now this means that guy who is refurbishing fuel injectors, his website too should have been listed when some searches for “repair fuel injector” right? Absolutely! So, what is the problem you might wonder.

The problem is, there are probably a thousand others who are also in the same line of business and having websites too. Now, ask yourself this question; whenever you search for something on Google, how often do you go past the first page? Probably never right? You probably find whatever you are seeking within the first few links displayed by the search engine.

Now, the link to the website of our fuel injector guy in this blog, is probably being listed on the 10th page or something which would explain why no prospective customer is visiting his website – because they never get to the 10th page.
