Adopting A Unicorn In The Fairy Garden
The miniature garden is a mysterious and magical place. Miniature plants clamor up the sides of fairy cottages and wee folk frolic underneath bright flower blossoms. Open a door in the garden, and you just might find yourself on a path towards an entirely new world! If you want your imagination to grow and your creativity to flourish, you definitely want to spend some time in the fairy garden.
One of my favorite ways to inspire wonder and creativity in the garden, whether I am providing garden fun for little ones or simply showing off my container garden to the next-door neighbor, is to “adopt” a new mystical garden resident. This month, I am hoping to adopt a unicorn. Of course, before my new friend arrives in the garden, I will have to make sure the garden is fit for such a regal resident.
How does one prepare the miniature garden for the arrival of a unicorn? First, I will want to be sure to have plenty of Fairy Dust on hand. A unicorn loves to be sprinkled with sparkles, so I may want to purchase or make several bottles of this magical dust. Then I will inspect the fairy cottages, doors, and other homes ...
... of my miniature garden residents. If the unicorn comes to visit, will there be enough room in the backyard? Is there a babbling brook where the unicorn could get a refreshing drink?
I definitely do not want my unicorn to get bored in the miniature garden, because it might decide to trot (or fly) away! So I will want to reserve a small patch of the garden for a meadow. This will allow the unicorn plenty of room to run and play. For the meadow, I will consider a ground cover plant that can take a bit of foot traffic—or hoof traffic, that is.
In addition to the meadow, I think I would like to plant a miniature tree under which the unicorn can nap and relax. In my garden, I like to choose plants that look a bit like the “real thing,” in my life-size yard, so I will probably choose something with a sturdy trunk and bright green leaves. Or if I’m hoping to add some color to my garden, there are plenty of colorful miniature tree varieties, too.
After preparing the miniature trees, flowers, cottages, and other accessories in the garden itself, it will be time to welcome the unicorn to its new home. I am lucky enough to have a niece and a nephew who both like to play outside, so I will probably invite them over to have a “Adopt-a-Unicorn” welcome party. We will make some little signs to help welcome the unicorn to the garden, and do a few preemptive shakes of fairy dust over the garden.
My niece and nephew usually like to help name the garden residents, so we have been discussing that part for a few weeks. In the event that it comes down to two or three choices, we will put it to a vote. Finally, each child will close their eyes and make a wish on the magical unicorn before I secure the unicorn’s pick firmly in the soil. Once the unicorn has found its place in the garden, the little ones and any other interested visitors can visit their new friend again and again.
