Depression is an extremely common and terrible disease that decreases a persons mood and quality of life. Depression has a certain social stigma attached to it which makes sufferers want to hide their condition and not seek help. It is important that society learns about this condition and that it can be cured. This article will start with the first steps in curing your depression before delving further into the many treatments available today.

The most common and emphasized advice given to those suffering depression is to accept your condition and make a conscious decision to seek help. It is important to take action because depression is such a serious disease and if left untreated can reduce your quality of life to the point where you may want to take your own life . Once you have taken this vital step, you must talk to your doctor who will try to determine the best treatment for you. Everyone is different, and with the many depression treatments available, different treatments only work for some people. It is important to be honest with your doctor so that they can recommend the appropriate treatment.

For ...
... those with less severe depression, lifestyle changes such as an increase in exercise, improved diet and reduced consumption of alcohol and drugs will help. Many people who change these areas of their lives have reported less frequent and less severe periods of depression. However this is not a cure for depression and those with more severe cases will needs other methods of treatment.

The most common treatment is medication such as antidepressant drugs. These drugs aim to suppress the biological part of depression and change the chemical balance in the human brain. There are many different antidepressants, and you must find which one is best for you . The most common of these is cyclic antidepressants such as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibiters (SSRI). When neurotransmitters are released into the brain, they are realized by the brain when passing through nerve cells. This process often depletes the amount of these neurotransmitters and in a depression sufferer this process may not allow the brain to transmit serotonin as effectively. SSRI antidepressants lengthen this process to allow for the serotonin to be transmitted to the brain for a longer period. However this is only a simple explanation and a way of understanding how this works. Other drugs are available however SSRI's are popular because they lack some of the negative side effects. These types of medication work for some people however most people have to try a few before they find the one that works for them.

An alternative depression treatment is psychological therapy. Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) helps a person to eliminate negative thoughts and views to be able to think about situations differently. There are a couple of other similar treatments which have proved to be effective in giving depression sufferers a long term solution as an alternative or in conjunction with medication. By addressing both the biological and psychological side of depression, the results have proved to be very successful for some.

These psychological treatments are often chosen to avoid the antidepressant drugs. These drugs are known to cause a range of undesirable side effects. The purpose of CBT, for example, is to provide the patient with tools that can be used to suppress depression for the rest of their life, whereas medication is a short term solution. It all depends on personal choice, however if you are interested in learning more about natural treatment I have provided some useful links at the end of this article.
