This Nintendo Switch game explores a very interesting angle through papercraft. The new Origami King Mario is essentially a puzzle game where your observation skills are rewarded. The plot of the game thickens when Mario finds out that King Olly has turned Princess Peach into a folded piece of paper. King Olly’s master plan is to take over the world and turn everything into Origami. That might not seem like such an evil thought to a lot of people. However, it gives Mario a mission for the game. In almost every story, there is a family member of the villain that sides with the protagonist. Similarly, Mario teams up with Olivia, King Olly’s sister on his mission to save Princess Peach. And then they say that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

What’s Different About This Mario Game?

One area that this game has clearly stepped up in is the gaming arena. It features a circular gaming arena, unlike the many other flat ones. Even the usual game concept of having “levels” has been played around with. You play The Origami King in one large overworld as opposed to broken down levels. You trek your way ...
... into the mountains from your hub destination (Toad Town) and are guided by cute little signposts en route.

Mario has a companion, Olivia. She is Olly’s sister and helps Mario by performing impossible tasks. Her abilities include filling up empty lakes with water and occasionally lifting the ground. To be honest, I’d be much happier if Mario had more control over the important decisions than he does. So sorry, Olivia, but I’m not a fan.

Exploring The Origami King landscape is quite exciting. With the ever-changing surroundings, you are never left with a stagnant moment of boredom. If you’re not busy fighting wonderfully crafted paper enemies, you’re either steering through wild rapids or having intelligent discussions in a quiet cafe. There are a series of mini-games that have been integrated to keep you on your toes.

In this game, almost everything is a Toad. A major chunk of the excitement here comes from unearthing secrets and discovering an obscene number of Toads. Apart from the comic relief that they provide, these toads with their witty little dialogue boxes also help you. During a battle, they fill up the stand around the arena to watch you. They also help you out by throwing objects at your enemies.

In combat, your goal is to reposition the enemies in such a way that you can either bop over them or hammer them for maximum damage. However, your moves are quite limited. Given the conditions, you will still be able to come up with strategic ways to move your enemies as the game proceeds.

Final Judgement

Overall, it’s a pretty involving game with its humorous script and beautifully designed visual world. I would, however, like to put weight behind the fact that it is too simple. The battles were just not challenging enough, and if you were expecting a role-playing game, you’re going to have to look elsewhere. On the other hand, you could be an old school Mario fan that takes solace in the simplicity and if so, kudos to you!
