Muktinath and more such religious Yatra suggestions for Hindus — 6 destinations
India is a land of culture and religion where people believe in the cycle of life and death. People here undertake several difficult and challenging yatras every year with the sole purpose of attaining salvation or to wash away all their sins. It is a popular belief that undertaking these yatras will rid them off of the cycle of life, death and rebirth.
Here is a look at some of the popular religious yatras in India.
6 Popular destinations for religious yatras for Hindus
1. Muktinath Yatra
The famous Muktinath Yatra in Nepal takes the pilgrims to the Muktinath Temple
that is much revered by the Hindus and the Buddhists alike. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu who is worshipped as ‘Muktinath’ or the ‘Lord of Salvation’ here.
According to the Hindu belief, the pilgrims can wash away all their sins by taking a holy dip in the two holy ponds in the temple and taking a bath under the 108 water spouts here. There are several ...
... ways of reaching the temple---by road, jeep, helicopter and flight.
Muktinath Yatra is regarded as one among the 108 Shakti Peetha.
2. Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
The Kailash Manasarovar Yatra is one of the most talked about yatras in India not just for its religious significance but also for the level of difficulty associated with it. The yatra takes one to an altitude of 22,000 feet to Mount Kailash which is believed to be lord Shiva’s abode. The pilgrims trek this herculean altitude to circumambulate around the peak which is popularly known as ‘Parikrama’ and take a holy dip in the Lake Mansarovar. Hindus believe doing these rituals will wash away all their sins.
3. Vaishno Devi Yatra
Vaishno Devi Yatra is not just a popular Hindu yatra in India but the temple also sees the maximum foot fall of the pilgrims. The yatra involves trekking 13 KMS to reach the cave shrine or the Vaishno Devi Temple. The shrine is located at an altitude of 5200 feet at the foothills of Himalayas. With the passage of time, the trek has become quite convenient with most of the facilities of transportation, and eating joints easily available. Still, there are several pilgrims that believe in abstaining from all kinds of conveniences and perform the entire yatra on foot.
4. Kashi Yatra
One of the oldest yatras in the country would be Kashi Yatra. Varanasi is also known as Kashi and is home to the holy river Ganga. There are different kinds of Kashi Yatras such as the Durga Devi Yatra, Gauri Yatra, and Jal Tirth Yatra among several others. Apart from several popular temples, there are also a number of popular ghats that form the part of this yatra.
5. Amarnath Yatra
Another popular Hindu yatra is the Amarnath Yatra that is taken up by almost 600,000 devotees every year, despite the challenging weather and altitude. The yatra involves a 43 kilometer long challenging trek that takes the pilgrims to the cave shrine at an altitude of 12,756 feet. The best time for the yatra is during the Shravani Mela festival that falls between July and August.
6. Char Dham Yatra
The yatra involves visiting four different pilgrimage sites that are spread across the country — Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri, and Rameswaram. As per the mythology, the Pandavas in the Mahabharata had announced these places particularly to wash off all the sins. Char Dham Yatra is so popular that you will get a variety of packages specially designed for the purpose. The tourism department is also doing efforts to improve the connectivity between these places.
