Land Crisis May Appear In 60 Years

According to the report of Daily Telegraph in the British, Australia Carbon Agriculture Conference had held in Sydney. The participating scientists warned that the world's fertile soil would disappear in 60 years, thus the mankind would face new food crisis. Scientists gave their comments that fertile soil in the global was disappearing faster than the natural complement, which lead the surface soil become barren. Every year, about 75 billion tons of soil had lost, 80% of lands which were suitable for farming in the world have suffered moderate or severe erosion. The climate change, increasing population and the erosion caused by the mismanagement and over-cultivation are the main reasons of the loss of fertile soil in the world.
The study from University of Sydney found that soil loss in China was faster than the natural replenishment with the rate of 57 times higher. Soil is an important store of carbon, if the soil is cultivated or dug, it will release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. The Assembly Agriculture predicted that if there was no drastic measure, the fertile soil may disappear in 60 years, which ...
... would lead to global food crisis, food shortages and soaring of food prices. If there is no further fracture occurred within the soil conditions in the world, fertile soil in Europe can continue to be farmed for 100 years. But recently, in order to compensate for the loss caused by reduce of global food production, the pressure on land is increasing which may mean the soil erosion become faster.
In September 2009, the British government issued new national soil protection policies, which proposed the peasants should use of chemical fertilizers as little as possible. About 40% cereals need to be imported every year in UK. What's worse, this percentage is rising in the past few years. In 2008, the British imported foods which worth 32 billion pounds, increased substantially than 2007. John Crawford, Professor of Sustainable Development of Agriculture in University of Sydney said it still didn't know how long the soil can continue to farming, it may be only 60 years at least, a figure prone to panic. Obviously we do not have enough time to stop the continued loss of soil and it is difficult to safeguard future food needs. It is no exaggeration to say that the soil is the most valuable resource for mankind. It is our duty-bound obligations to protect it for future generations.
