The wastewater generated by industries and commercial establishments is full of harmful contaminants which if released as is in the environment, can be extremely dangerous. Through the process of wastewater treatment, contaminants including bacteria, toxins, chemicals, etc are removed from the water in a plant, and that treated water is then either fit to be released back into the environment or can also be reused for any purpose other than drinking. This process takes places at a wastewater treatment plant. What kind of treatment is to be done depends upon the intended end use of that wastewater, whether it is to be reused or released back in the environment.

Wastewater treatment plants can broadly be classified into how they are treating the contaminants. Biological wastewater treatment plants use biological enzymes and bacteria to break down waste particles in the contaminated water and is ideal for residential and office complexes. Physical wastewater treatment plants used chemical reactions to treat the polluted water and are generally used ...
... to handle wastewater from industries.

Types of wastewater treatment plants:

Industrial wastewater treatment plants
Wastewater generated by a range of industries around the world has been a big cause of concern to environmental organisations. The scale of pollutants in this type of wastewater is extremely dangerous and detrimental to the humans and environment if those pollutants are not treated and removed before being released. Chemical, petrochemicals, paper and pulp, textile, power plants are some industries that need to treat their wastewater before disposal into water bodies like lakes, rivers or oceans. These industries may have the wastewater treatment plants in the premise, to save on the cost of transporting the polluted water to outside facility. The treated water often gets reused within the premises for purposes like bathrooms, watering the plants, cleaning etc.

Sewage treatment plants
A typical sewage wastewater treatment plant has primary and secondary levels to treat the contaminants in the water. Primary treatment removes solid material from the polluted water, and then secondary treatment works on the dissolved and suspended organic material, phosphorus, disinfection etc to kill bacteria. The sludge produced here then needs to be handled with sludge treatment.

Agricultural wastewater treatment plants
Wastewater generated during agriculture and allied processes also carries pesticides, contaminants that must be treated else that water can be harmful to the water table of the area.

SmartMBR range of wastewater treatment and water recycling systems
This revolutionary range of wastewater recycling system by Huber has been designed for large cities that are burgeoning with industries and buildings. These membrane bioreactor systems are easy to install, easy to use, and are cost effective.

The wastewater treated through smartMBR systems is clean and odor-free, and though it is not fit for drinking purposes, it can be put to many other uses such as cleaning, bathrooms, watering the gardens, golf courses, parks, in the construction activities amongst many others. This system can be easily installed and used in commercial establishments, residential complexes, office buildings, etc.

Membrane bioreactor systems combine a membrane process with a biological wastewater treatment process to recycle wastewater.
