Cannabidiol (CBD) are the critical components of the cannabis plant, which tend to interact with receptors within our bodies. CBD's effect on viral infection was long neglected until it was found effective in treating a variety of medical conditions. Though researches are still in progress, CBD takes the credit for treating chronic pain, epilepsy, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, and few other symptoms of viral diseases. It activates the endocannabinoid system, improves our bodily functions, and boosts innate immunity.

Many experts are finding ways to unearth the prominent effect of CBD on viral infections. As per current evidence, three relevant studies that showed the impact of CBD are discussed below.

1. CBD and Viral Hepatitis

Untreated hepatitis can cause severe liver damage that may result in hepatocellular carcinoma or any other chronic diseases. A profound CBD study was conducted on hepatitis and examined in culture for several days. After that, it was noted that CBD has the potential to inhibit the replication of HCV cells by up to 86.4%. However, in comparison to treatment ...
... drugs of hepatitis, CBD was found active against HCV but not against HBV in vitro.

2. CBD and KSHV

To assess the effect of CBD on Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), researchers used human dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HMVECs). The outcome of the study was that CBD exhibited some indirect antiviral effects on KSHV. It was also discovered that CBD could restrict the development of KHSV-associated cancers in normal cells. While the efficiency with which KSHV infected the cells was constant, the spreading of the KSHV-infected cells was reduced.

3. CBD and TMEV

Eventually, the effect of CBD on mice infected with Theiler’s murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) was assessed. Accordingly, researchers learned that prolonged CBD exposure could decrease white blood cell infiltration and microglia activation in mice’s brains. Consequently, CBD could reduce the frequency and severity of neuroinflammation in the chronic phase of infection with TMEV. But, no experimental evidence of the direct or indirect antiviral effect of CBD was found.
After frequent researches, it is now believed that cannabis and its derivatives possess a certain amount of medical potential for treating critical ailments. As per online sources, CBD is beneficial to cure viral infections such as oral and genital herpes, hepatitis C, Kaposi’s Sarcoma, respiratory viruses, HIV/AIDS, Ebola, and glandular fever. However, there is no substantial evidence that CBD could help in preventing coronavirus disease.
