When you take a look at any fairy garden, especially in the summertime, you are likely struck by the beauty and color of the miniature plants. Even indoor container gardens can grow verdant, green plants and bright flower blossoms. Miniature accessories and fairy cottages stand out in a miniature garden, but miniature plants are always changing and growing. The right miniature plants can make the fairy garden a lively and immersive experience.

One of my favorite ways to add green and growth to the miniature garden is through the use of moss. Whether I’m decorating a small dish garden with artificial moss or adding texture and color to my outdoor garden with preserved moss, this underappreciated landscaping material is my go-to!

It's easy to add a touch of nature to your fairy garden with moss mats. These can be used as ground cover outside fairy cottages or under stepping stones to create paths. They can even be attached to the roof of a fairy cottage to create a marshy forest setting. The durable mesh backing of these mats is easy to measure and cut. Just use hot glue, adhesive spray, or even double-sided tape ...
... to adhere it to any surface.

If you prefer to use only live plants in your miniature garden, a scotch moss or Irish moss should do the trick. These perennial ground cover plants are technically not moss. Easy to grow, they stay green all year long and can be planted between stepping stones, used as grass substitutes, and celebrated for the tiny flowers they produce. They will work well in the fairy garden.

For my indoor container gardens, dish gardens, and other small projects, I prefer to use preserved moss. Reindeer moss and other preserved moss varieties can be tucked around miniature plants, glued down around fairy cottages, and placed all around a fairy garden. It adds texture, color, and personality to any garden. If you have any left after decorating your fairy garden, you can use extra preserved moss in craft projects, model train scenes, and DIY projects like homemade wreaths. Reindeer moss comes in a wide variety of colors, from bright green to deep purple. For a romantic take on the miniature garden, you can even find reindeer moss with a rich pink color! The best part? Preserved moss needs no maintenance whatsoever, and it lasts indefinitely.

Next time you are planning a terrarium, fairy garden, container garden, or outdoor display, consider incorporating some moss! The earthy tones of green and brown moss will lend a realistic look to any garden, and will help cover up bare soil. Preserved moss can be affixed to fairy cottage roofs, walls, lawns, and steps. You could even create a field of moss or moss-like ground cover, and fill it with miniature toadstools, glass stones, and glitter for a magical fairy field. Or incorporate moss into a delicate wooden bridge, miniature furniture, tiny fountain, or rocky path. Wherever you decide to add moss, your fairy garden is sure to burst with color, life, and mysterious, magical energy that will have visitors returning time and time again.
