Summer is a special time in the miniature garden. Sunlight pours onto the miniature plants and all of the fairies come out to play. Miniature trees fill out with bright green leaves. Summer showers leave the fairy garden cool and refreshed. The lush, green look of a summertime miniature garden is joyous indeed. But what about that other, sprightlier sibling of the green garden? The bright garden filled with colorful miniature plants?

Yes, green gardens are a hallmark of summer, but bright colors cannot be overlooked. With just a bit of care and planning, any gardener can add a rainbow of miniature plants to their fairy garden. Picture dark blue flowers spilling out of rocky crevices while bright yellow ice plants cover the ground. A colorful garden is an escape for the senses and a bounty for the imagination! While one could plant the miniature garden with enough colors to fill a crayon box, it can be fun to choose just one or two colors for each container garden or miniature garden. This season, instead of swooning over pretty blue flowers or planting fields of bright yellow, I have fallen in love with pink.

Pink! ...
... The color of popping bubblegum, full piggy banks, juicy watermelon, and funny flamingos. For a whimsical, lighthearted, and decidedly feminine garden, there is no better color to plant. Pink flowers and fairy garden plants will bring a smile to the face of any garden visitor. My current favorite is Dianthus Popstar Pop Star Pinks. This everblooming flower features ruffled double flowers with bright pink petals. Frilly and fringed, they are bursting with personality. Bees and butterflies are attracted to these flowers wherever you plant them, from rock gardens and borders to containers and beds. Plant these in full sun and well-drained soil, and you will enjoy blossoms all summer long! As an added bonus, they feature a strong clove scent.

Another favorite pink plant for the garden is Pleioslilos nelii Royal Flush Purple Split Rock. This succulent not only brings color to the miniature garden, but it has an extremely unique “split rock” appearance. Like Dianthus, this one prefers bright sunlight and plenty of drainage. While its thick leaves are deep purple in color, a daisy-like flower emerges in the mid-afternoon. The bright pink flower has a sunny yellow center. It closes back up at sunset. The midday surprise gives gardeners something to look forward to each and every day.

After you have planted pink flowers and miniature plants to your heart’s content, you may want to add a few miniature accessories. A Pink Rose Fairy is a natural fit. Bettina and Bell love to dance and play among the miniature trees and flowers. They will be forever grateful to you for outfitting the fairy garden with blossoms and miniature plants in their favorite color. To kick the color levels up a little further, use pink-hued reindeer moss to add texture around your pink miniature plants. The preserved moss can be placed around the base of a plant, tucked into topiaries, or used in a container garden. No matter where you plant them, pink miniature plants will bring color, light, beauty, and plenty of fun to your miniature garden.
