Many people head to sunny Mallorca for holidays each year and head straight for the nearest beach or shopping mall. If you want to see the real Mallorca however, attending one of the many annual festivals that take place there is key.

Festivals in Mallorca are an eclectic mix of the modern and the traditional. Saints Days are often celebrated in street parties and you will see people in fancy dress partying through the night. There are more traditional religious festivals as well as modern festivals that celebrate the latest in Mallorcan music and the arts.

At the beginning of the year, from 16th to 17th January, is the Sant Antoni Abat festival. Animal lovers and children of all ages will love this festival, which celebrates the animals of the island. The streets of Palma, Arta and Sa Pobla feature processions of farm animals and pets too!

Te Calgata de los Reyes Magos is a longstanding tradition where the Three Kings arrive in Palma over the seas by boat. Whole families attend as the Three Kings give gifts, sweets and treats to the local and visiting children.

An important part of Mallorcan history ...
... is celebrated during May when the Moros i Cristians festival takes place. This marks the day when the women of Mallorca battled with, and successfully defeated, a band of attacking pirates in 1561. People dress up in traditional costume, reenact the historical drama and then celebrate into the night.

With the seas and oceans being of great importance to the island, it is no surprise to fnd festivals that celebrate the seas and the Mallorcans who make a living from it. The patron saint of fishermen, Sant Pere is honoured every June with parades of boats filling the surrounding seas and ports - a colourful sight that is not to be missed!

August is a time for dancing in Mallorca and the oldest festival on the island - the Sant Bartomeu festival is a must see for anyone looking to experience truly authentic Mallorcan culture. Devil-dancing takes place long into the night in Montuiri and there is much fun to be had into the wee small hours.

Mallorca is home to some unique nd delicious dishes, many of which are celebrated at special festivals around the island. Binissalem hosts a wine fair every year, Vilafranca has its own melon festival while the most traditional of Malloran dishes - the botifarro blood sausage, is given its own special celebration each October.
