Comcast Will Soon Release Tunerfish

Comcast is the largest internet service provider in the U.S. The media giant is making the news in the tech world with their new, soon to be released project Tunerfish. It is not yet known exactly what Tunerfish will be but there has been a road paved for this project starting a few years back.

In 2005, Comcast expanded and created a new division called Comcast Interactive Media which is dedicated to online media. Then in 2008 they purchased the unique social networking site Plaxo. You might have been introduced to Plaxo as the plug-in that would integrate with MSN Messenger when you created new contacts. Another online media move made by Comcast was the launch of Fancast.com where you could log on and watch movies and TV shows online.

I’m not sure how Plaxo is being worked into Tunerfish but if you log on to Tunerfish.com, you’ll notice there are three choices to login into the site including via Twitter, Facebook, and Plaxo. The site is not open yet but you can enter your email to be notified as soon as the beta version is available.

... on Tunerfish, you can follow Tunerfish on Twitter to follow their tight-lipped tweets. You’ll notice they have a rather new Twitter page with only a handful of tweets and followers. One update mentions that Tunerfish was at SXSW 2010 and that although they partied, they managed to keep Tunerfish under wraps.

We will find out just what Tunerfish is on May 24 at the Techcrunch Disrupt conference. The news about the introduction broke out on Techcrunch and apparently, they already know what Tunerfish is but they are not telling. Not sure why this project is so hush hush but according to Techcrunch, we are sure to be impressed.

One thing Techcrunch did mention is the Plaxo team is behind Tunerfish which leads me to believe it will be one big integrated social site that will include watching TV online and social networking. Taking a look at the logo design for Tunerfish, I’m reminded of a grainy TV screen. With so many different choices for social sites out there, how will this one be different? The suspense is killing me but stay tuned for an update!
