Impact of Image Processing on the Diagnostics Industry

With the discovery of X-Ray in the year 1895, medical technology has made a great leap which has helped humanity to ‘look’ beyond the impossible. Human beings are complex structures constructed intricately with flesh, bones, organs, tissues, cells etc. With the change in lifestyle, change in climate, with increasing stress in daily life, human beings are susceptible to various diseases and syndromes. The fastest-moving medical technology has helped us to have a detailed and minute observation of the interior functions of the body for better and accurate treatment.
Image Processing or Medical Imaging is the scientific technique of forming visual representations of the interior parts of the body which lies under the skin for clinical analysis and intervention. Image processing includes Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Medical Ultrasound, Endoscopy, Position Emission Tomography (PET), X-ray radiography etc. These visual representations help the doctors and scientists to address the symptoms better and start the required medical procedures. The ever-increasing ...
... application of Image Processing has certain impacts on the Diagnostics Industry, and we will know them in details in the following few paragraphs. Are you read? Let’s start!
1. The requirement of Image Analysts in Diagnostics Industry: In recent years, Image Processing is used in full swing for accurate diagnosis, and thus help mankind fight against deadly diseases and also accidents. But, with Image processing, there has to be specialists and experts who can analyze these images accurately for the consequent procedures. The diagnostics industry across the globe are in constant search of expert Image analysts who can give an accurate reading of these medical images. According to Personnel Today reports, National Health Service has observed a sharp hike of radiologist’s workloads by 30%, but the workforce has increased only by 15%. This data clearly indicates that the radiologists are overloaded, and this can result in a faulty analysis of Medical Imaging. Image Analysts can share this workload of radiologists, and they can give their full attention towards analyzing the images.
2. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an integral part of Image Processing: The scientific technology behind Medical Image Processing is developing every single day, and the Diagnostic Industry needs AI-driven software for doing the rest of the duties. The software and the machines will capture the images and the AI will be an aid in the analysis of abnormalities as detected by the Image processing. For treating cancers, AI will use specially formulated algorithms to measure the probability of a tumour of being benign or malignant. This will help the doctors and medical professionals to make the right decisions about the ongoing treatment.
3. Digital assistance to clinicians: AI-driven technology will help the doctors and clinicians to get a fast analysis of images received. Image processing and Image analysis are making the diagnosis more accurate and less time-consuming. Image processing is helping the doctors and paramedics to find abnormalities in the body functions, they are able to make a straightforward diagnosis using Image processing methods like Ultrasound, Endoscopy, CT scan, MRI scan etc. Reading these images is possible by the software, giving the medical science a competent digital assistance.
4. Beneficial to the patients: The patients are in the receiving end, all the procedures and the software are designed keeping their health in mind. With advanced Image processing, the patients will face lesser procedures, it is obvious that the medical tests and procedures are time-consuming, painful and also expensive. The patients will have to consume lesser drugs and sedatives as their conditions will be monitored via Image processing. Image Processing will help the doctors to understand the exact conditions of the patients, and thus the patients will be receiving accurate and fast treatment.
Keeping all these consequences in mind, it is possible to conclude that Image Processing is a blessing to Diagnostics and Medical Industry. Faster, accurate diagnosis is possible due to the advanced Image Processing and Image Analyzing technology. With each passing day technology is developing, letting mankind dwell a little longer on the planet Earth!
