Things To Know About Piston, Piston Rings And Connecting Rods
An engine is the main power-driven component of any mechanical machinery. The power in the engine generated with the help of a piston that connected to the connecting rod. The connecting rod is the main element that connects the piston to the crankshaft. Further, the connecting rod is responsible for transferring power from the piston to the crankshaft.
The piston in a cylindrical chamber transfers power by reciprocating. It's also an element of reciprocating pumps, engines, pneumatic cylinders, and gas compressors. Piston, piston rings and connecting rods all are the parts of an engine.
Material use for Connecting Rod
The connecting rod or piston rod withstands an immense amount of pressure and heat and are highly prone to damage under such a load. Therefore, they also need special care and maintenance to ensure they don't damage at such high pressure.
Hence, steel and aluminum used for the manufacturing of piston rods. The manufacturing process of the connecting rod is of the following types-casting, powdered metallurgy, and forging.
How ...
... to install a piston on a connecting rod?
A piston is a moving part that moves back and forth in a cylindrical chamber which is made air-tight with the help of piston rings. The main work of the piston is to transfer pressure and energy to the crankshaft by reciprocating in the engine. While installing the piston on the connecting rod, you should focus on these steps given below.
● Clean the Piston:
First thing first, while installing the piston, make sure that your piston is clean after then remove the wrist pin. Then rotate the rod's end in the wrist pin. With the help of pliers pluck, squeeze and move out the C clips from the groove. And also make sure that all the wrist pins have plucked out from every piston.
● Add lubricant:
Second, clean all the components before connecting them to the piston. Then anoint lubricant on the wrist pin, piston holes, and piston rod. It will help in the easy installation of the piston.
● Connect with the rod:
Partially insert the wrist pin on the piston by aligning the piston hole and piston rod. Then keep moving the pin inside the rod followed by the piston hole.
● Heat the rod:
Heat the connecting rod with the help of a torch. Meanwhile, use a C clip to insert into the piston and groove.
Functions of a Piston Ring
The piston ring used to seal the gas, oil, and heat. It helps in maintaining the temperature inside the cylindrical chamber.
● Gas Seal function:
The rings of piston used as a gas seal in the combustion chamber. The chamber must be made air-tight. So that the pressure generated by the piston transferred to the crankshaft as soon as possible.
● Heat Transfer function:
Heat energy moves from the piston groove through the piston rings into the cylindrical wall and finally transferred to the engine coolant. It's essential to maintain the heat inside the piston to prevent any damage in the piston.
● Oil Control function:
A small amount of lubricant is required to connect the piston with the connecting rod. However, it's necessary to maintain the amount of grease, as it can damage the ring. The rings used to remove the excess amount of oil from the chamber to increase the efficiency of the engine.
The India Piston Ring has been into manufacturing the top class piston rings, cylinder sleeves and different types of engine parts. It has been making the types of parts of the engine and also its subparts, for a number of decades now, using the best in class and state-of-art technology to manufacture the products.
