You can wash your car or change the stepney of the car by yourself without taking the help of a professional technician. You can even attempt to change the engine oil and other lubricants used in the car. When it comes to checking under the bonnet and fixing anything on the dashboard you might look for professional assistance for an appropriate and perfect solution. In this write-up, we will be talking about changing Hilux clock spring.

The clock spring is an electronic device fixed on the steering wheel of a car and has the most important function of indicating what's going on in your vehicle. You must have seen the indicator lights in the instrument cluster giving out signals for different purposes like ignition, fuel metre, turning indications and other notifications. These are all connected to the steering wheel.

Now you may be thinking how can you get so many notifications on your instrument cluster just through the steering wheel? It is the clock spring that connects the steering ...
... wheel to the notification lights.

In case the clock spring is not working, you won't even be able to blow the horn. The device is situated inside the steering wheel and its not visible from the outside. If you are working on fixing it, you should have some knowledge over the functionality and operation on how to work on internal parts.

Step by step instruction to replace Hilux clock spring

First step

You would like to detach the battery from the circuit to deactivate the airbag and let your vehicle discharge for around 15 minutes.

Second step

The second step is removing the airbag. The airbag is placed right in front of the steering assembly and comes into action in case of a head-on collision. One needs to be very careful while removing this part as vibration can activate the airbag. There are a couple of nuts that need to be taken out situated beside the steering wheel. The airbag also has a clip attached to the steering wheel that needs to be removed carefully.

Third step

In the third step, we will be working on removing the steering wheel from the assembly. After removing the centre nut and with some jiggles the steering wheel will come off automatically. It is better to mark all the places where there is a turn so that you can assemble it back in the correct position. There are some clips as well that you need to remove to free it from the circuit.

Fourth step

After removing the steering will you get a clear view of the clock spring which is round in shape. Two nuts hold the device in place along with a cover as well. After removing some nuts the device will free itself and is ready to be removed and replaced. Remove some clips and it is free from the steering assembly.

Fifth step

In this step, you will be placing the new Hilux clock spring. The fixing is just the opposite of how you removed the faulty one and should not be a problem if you remember the steps accurately.
