Otherwise known as marijuana, weed is mostly detectable in bodily fluids for up to 30 days after last use. Generally, weed detection depends on the amount usually corresponds association with longer detection times. Among daily users, weed can even be detected many months after last use, sometimes going beyond 90 days.

Detecting Weed via Drug Testing

Drug tests measure marijuana and its metabolites or by-products. These metabolites remain in the system long after the effects of weed have already worn off. Weed can be detected in the urine, saliva, hair and blood, but the most common methods used today are urine testing and blood testing.

Urine Testing
Urine testing is the most common weed testing method. Among occasional users (up to 3 times a week), weed can be detected three days after use. Moderate users (4 times a week) can retain marijuana in their system for 5 to 7 days. Chronic or daily users can still be detected after 10 to 15 days, while chronic ...
... heavy users (multiples time a day) can still be detected over 30 days after. Being fat soluble, cannabis metabolites bind to fat molecules in the body, so it takes some time for them before they leave the system.

Blood Testing
Weed is usually evident in the blood for 1 to 2 days. In some cases, however, it can stay on for up to 25 days. Among chronic heavy users, the length of time that it can be detected is increased. Within just seconds after inhalation, marijuana can already be detected in the blood. It is distributed to the body tissues, with some it being reabsorbed and broken down. Its metabolites can stay in the bloodstream for days. Blood testing can be done in laboratory settings to indicate recent use of marijuana.

How Long Is Weed Metabolized in the Body?

The active ingredient found in marijuana is tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. This chemical substance enters the body and is absorbed into the bloodstream. Some of it gets stored into the fatty tissues and organs. The rest gets to the kidneys and is reabsorbed into the bloodstream.

THC goes to the liver where it is broken down into over 80 metabolites. Drug tests for weed detection are designed to look for these metabolites, which stay in the body for a much longer time compared to THC. Eventually, depending on the factors stated above, THC and its metabolites are excreted in stool and urine.

How Long Does Weed Stay in the System?

There are many factors affecting how long marijuana stays in the system, including gender, age, and BMI (body mass index). They are not directly related to cannabis, but they affect how the body metabolizes and processes the drug. Other factors actually relate to marijuana and how it is used, such as dose and frequency.

The higher the dose and the frequency, the longer it takes to eliminate the marijuana from the system. More potent weed contains higher levels of THC, and can remain in the body for a longer period of time. Also, marijuana that is ingested can stay in the system a little bit longer than when it is smoked.

How Can Weed be Metabolized Faster?

Not much can be done to speed up the amount of time it takes for marijuana to get out of the system. After it enters the system, the body will need time to break it down. Eating healthy, staying hydrated and exercising can help, although not drastically. Some cannabis detox kits are available in the market, but they do not work reliably.

Weed can stay in the body anywhere from a several days to a few months after last use. The detection window depends on the kind of test used, and other factors like whether weed is ingested or smoked on a regular basis. Talk to your doctor to learn more about weed use and if it is the right option for you.
