First of all, you will likely be wondering why a person would bother to clean a plastic shower curtain to be begin with? It is well known that a plastic shower curtain can be purchased from the dollar store for a dollar, so why take the time to clean it? The answer is that a plastic shower curtain is not recyclable and takes a very long time to break down and decompose. While this information may seem irrelevant, if you think about the millions of plastic shower curtains already in the mounds of waste in the United States alone, you can appreciate the fact it is best to continue to clean and use a plastic shower curtain. However, it is true that in time plastic shower curtains do become stained and hard water streaked and making them look new is a good idea. Here are some helpful hints on how to do that:

• Probably the most important thing to do to keep a plastic shower curtain clean is to wipe the excess moisture off after each use. When you are finished drying yourself off, you can use your towel to do this. Or, you can keep an old towel (beach towel is good) on a hook for use in drying your shower curtain.
• The ...
... next important step is to keep the shower curtain completely open following the use of the shower. This will allow the curtain to dry quickly. Turning on a bathroom fan (if you have one) is a good idea to speed up drying as well. It is essential to dry the curtain quickly to prevent mold and mildew from forming.
• Once a month, for regular use, the plastic shower curtain should be removed and washed in the washer (sink or bathtub if you don’t have a washer) in warm, soapy water. Use a mild laundry soap and a small amount of bleach on the gentle cycle. The curtain can then be air dried, outside is good when possible, or in the dryer on warm or air fluff for about 20 minutes. Throw in a couple of large towels to help speed the drying.
• Sometimes hard water stains won’t come out with normal washing, and you will need to soak the shower curtain in a vinegar bath for an hour before washing.
• Rust stains can also be a problem, and a bleach soak will usually take these out prior to washing.
• A final trick to help keep a shower curtain clean on a regular basis, particularly when several persons are using the shower every day, is to keep a container of all-purpose cleaner handy with a sponge to wipe away spots as they occur. If spot is done regularly, the plastic shower curtain will not have to be washed as often.

Keeping your plastic shower curtain clean and mold, mildew, and rust-free, takes a few minutes on a regular basis but is certainly best for the heath of those taking showers as well as for helping the environment. And, it goes without saying, a clean, shiny, plastic shower curtain encourages those taking showers to enjoy keeping themselves clean and fresh.
