Diabetes is a lifestyle disease that creates a lot of trouble for the patient. The high blood sugar in diabetes can cause damage to vital organs like kidneys, heart, etc. if not controlled properly. The allopathic system of medicine can only keep the blood sugar level low but cannot cure the ailment. On the other hand, the ancient system of Ayurveda can cure diabetes completely. There are many herbal medicines in Ayurveda which not only keep the blood sugar levels under control, but they also cure diabetes completely.

Let us look at some of the best Ayurvedic treatment for diabetes:

Gurmar – Gymnema Sylvestre: This herb is known as gurmar commonly which literally means sugar crusher. It is known for its properties of reducing the blood sugar levels which has been proved by many studies. This herb especially lowers the fasting blood sugar level. It also assists in the regeneration of the residual beta cells in the pancreas and hence reduces the dependence on insulin medicines.

Cocciniaindica: ...
... This is a very powerful anti-diabetes agent. It is known to regulate the breakdown of starch in the body. In this way, it helps prevent the sudden increase in sugar level in the blood immediately after the consumption of carbohydrates. It also protects the vital organs from the damaging effects of high blood sugar levels. At the same time, the composition of fatty acid in diabetics can be prevented by consuming the leaves of this plant. It also has a strong antioxidant effect and protects diabetics from oxidative stress.

Neem – Azadirachta Indica: The bitter seeds and leaves of the neem plant are very effective in controlling high blood sugar levels in diabetics. It can be used alone or in combination with anti-diabetic herbal medicines for improving glucose tolerance in diabetics.

Mulberry – Morusindica: The leaves of this plant have been recommended by Ayurveda for lowering the sugar levels in the blood. According to experimental studies taking the leaves of the mulberry plant for 15 days can cause around a 38% reduction in the sugar levels in the blood. These leaves also correct the lipid abnormalities in diabetes patients. They also improve the antioxidant defense system of the body and reduce oxidative stress.

Bitter Gourd: Bitter gourd is a well known anti-diabetes agent. It is used extensively in Ayurveda for the treatment of diabetes. It helps to increase insulin secretion as it enhances the function of the beta cells in the pancreas. It also helps in reversing the damage to the beta cells in the pancreas. It also enhances the number of beta cells in the pancreas.

Jamun – Eugenia Jambolana: The fruit and seeds of this plant are known to reduce the blood sugar level in diabetics. It enhances the secretion of insulin by the pancreas. It is also known to prevent damage to kidneys in diabetic patients. The extract of the seed of this plant helps in accelerating the healing of wounds.

Fenugreek – Trigonella Foenum: The seeds of fenugreek plants are easily available in any Indian home and they reduce the blood sugar level in the diabetes patients. Simply soaking the seeds in water overnight and then consuming them in the morning along with the water has a great reducing effect on the blood sugar levels. Nowadays you can also get the extract of fenugreek seeds and consuming 1 gram of this extract every day for two months will reduce the blood sugar levels considerably. Fenugreek has a hypoglycemic effect which is attributed to the compound diosgenin.

Always bear in mind that although some of the medicines for diabetes mentioned above are popularly used as home remedies for diabetes in India, it is always best to consult a qualified Ayurveda doctor before taking any herbal medicines.
