You would be more than surprised to know that trekking in Nepal in winter is not just doable but also has its own share of benefits. It is not just the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake that is doable in winter but most of the other treks in Nepal, including the high altitude treks, can be done conveniently in the months of December and January.
Annapurna Circuit is a comprehensive trek in itself. It lets you have an adventure, enjoy the scenic beauty and explore the local culture, all at one time! Combine
Annapurna Circuit Trek with a side trek of Tilicho Lake and you reach the highest lake in the world!
If you are looking to do the ordinary, the best time to trek this one is from October to early December and late February to April. But winter months of December and January are also a great time to trek and more so, with quite a few benefits.
Benefits of trekking during winters
Here are a few benefits that you will get to enjoy only if you choose to trek in winter:
1. For the past few years, winters in Nepal have been ...
... very clear. This means the trekkers can enjoy clear views of mountains covered in snow and the beautiful landscape around.
2. Even though the temperatures are low in winter, you can enjoy the greenery and beautiful flowers, especially in the lower altitudes.
3. Since the winter season is not quite popular with the trekkers, the trail is less crowded, the lodges are not too crammed full, the Wi-Fi works much better, and there is certainly no queuing up and extra waiting for services such as hot showers and hot meals.
4. Even though it is winters, trekking and climbing up the hills in the sunny weather will not just leave you warm but might also leave you sweating and exhausted.
Even though there are multiple benefits of trekking in Nepal in the winter season, it is important not to take the low temperatures for granted and be well prepared instead. Here are a few tips to keep in mind if you have plans to trek the Himalayas during winters.
Some useful tips to trek conveniently during winters
• When packing your warm clothes, remember that it is better to carry a few extra than less.
• Invest not just in the right quantity of gears but also in the right quality of winter gear. Ensure that you have an appropriate number of base layers, fleet jackets, down jackets, warm gloves, hats and lowers and a warm and comfortable sleeping bag.
• Apart from the clothes, check your list for the necessary equipment as well such as trekking poles, good quality UV sunglasses, etc.
• When dressing up for your big day of trekking ahead, remember to dress up in layers. This makes it very convenient to take off the layers one by one as the temperatures begin to rise and you feel hot.
• Do not just prepare yourself physically but mentally as well to face any kind of challenge. Be prepared for windy, icy conditions, limited options of lodges and on the menu too.
So if you are willing to take up the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho lack
in the winter months of December and January, it is perfectly all right with a few precautions, of course. But it is not advisable to take up this trek in the month of February and March since there is much heavier rainfall in this part of the winters.
