When we talk about women empowerment in India, we can imagine thousands of women working in the corporate sector we see daily commuting in metro cities. But we cannot neglect the women working in the agriculture sector in rural areas when talking about women empowerment.

The vision of socio-economic empowerment of Indian women cannot be imagined without empowering those living in India's rural areas. These are the ones whose day begins before the sunrise and continues even after the sunset. These women farmers of India often go unnoticed due to their gender and have to struggle to establish their own identity at even common levels because of the male-dominated customs and gender-based discrimination.

Women working in the agriculture sector also play a role as a mother, sister, wife and daughter in law in their daily lives. Though, gender-based discrimination still continues in many ways in India: women farmworkers are not yet recognized as full-time farmers in India thus neglected to be given any institutional supports such as the bank, cooperatives, insurance and other government departments.

... of these women need to be noticed at both the strategic planning and implementation levels if we want to recognize the vision of a progressive India.
