Diamond Clarity: Guide To Clarity Of Diamonds
Diamond Clarity
Diamonds, the hardest material on the earth in moh’s scale of hardness. The diamonds are formed under extreme heat and pressure. The temperature rises up to 2200 Fahrenheit in the earth's mantle. Natural diamonds take one to three billion years to form in the earth’s mantle between 80 to 120 miles.
Is it not great how a diamond goes through these conditions and then it becomes the part of your jewelry. The jewelry can be rings, earrings, and necklaces. It gives it a unique look to your personality and lifestyle. Its fire and brilliance the one only one thing that’s the only factor of diamonds. Nature made this beautiful material in extreme conditions to be part of your jewelry.
The imperfect raw diamond is perfected by the craftsman. Craftsman gives it cut and shape to produce brilliance and sparkle.
The 4 cs plays an important role in determining the value of Diamond. The 4 cs are Cut Grade, Color grade, Clarity grade, and Carat weight. The Clarity grade is an important grade for a diamond.
The harsh conditions ...
... it has gone through produce inclusions and blemish in it. The clarity grade is a qualitative factor for diamonds. The lesser the inclusions are more the brilliance it will produce. The rarest of rare is a perfect diamond found naturally. Let’s understand better about the diamond clarity scale.
Diamond Clarity Categories
Diamond Clarity scale has 6 categories which sum to a total of 11 grades:
1. Flawless (FL): The diamonds which don’t have any internal and external imperfections. They are rarely found because inclusions free diamonds are impossible to found. Less than 1% of total diamonds falls under FL category
2. Internally Flawless (IF): Does not have any inclusions under 10x magnifications but some surface blemish can be seen using the microscope and are visually clear.
3. Very Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2): In these diamonds, inclusions can be seen under microscopic magnification of 10X zoom. It is even difficult for trained experts to notice any inclusions using a Microscope. It appears clear to the eye.
4. Very Slight Included (VS1 and VS2): The inclusions can be categorized in minor which are noticeable under magnification of 10x.
5. Slightly Included (S1 and S2): The inclusion under 10x microscopic magnifications are noticeable. S1 diamonds can look eye-clean but S2 diamond has inclusions which can be seen when viewing from side..
6. Included (I1, I2, and I3): These diamonds have inclusions which are visible and affect the properties of diamond that its clarity and brilliance.
Some of the inclusions are too tiny that it is even hard to notice by an Expert grader. Like for a Naked Eye, VS1 and SI2 may look similar but are different in overall quality. That’s why expert advice and assessment is taken for knowing the value of the diamond.
Diamond Clarity Factors
The Clarity Grade of a Diamond depends on 5 significant Factors which are Size, Nature, Number, Location, and Color & Relief. Let's understand them better:
1. Size
The Bigger the size of Inclusion the more it will affect the diamond clarity. The size of inclusions factors clarity grade.
2. Nature
It is the type of inclusion nature a diamond have and its impact on the diamond durability. This factor also provides information about the depth and other characteristics.
3. Number
The Number of Inclusions can be noticed on the diamond. The less are numbers the higher it has clarity grade.
4. Location
This factor tells the information about the location of the inclusion in the diamond. The location of inclusion is at the center of diamond then the clarity will be affected more. If the inclusions are at girdle and pavilion are difficult to see and facet can reflect the inclusions.
5. Relief
It is the characteristic of inclusion that can be easily noticeable. This is to know about the contrast of inclusion in comparison to other surrounding diamonds.
Though these are the main factors of Clarity Grade, there are also some other certain clarity factors which affect the diamond clarity that are Shape, proportions and facet arrangements of the diamond.
The Flawless and Internally Flawless are rarely found because of their best quality. For the best-valued price, you can choose the diamond in which the inclusions are not easily noticeable by a clean eye.
