Maqam-e-Ibrahim is a large block of stone on which footprints of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) are carved. It is present inside Masjid-al-Haram near the Holy Kaabah; in front of the door of the Kaaba, and the Multazam. The Maqam-e-Ibrahim remains enclosed in a spherical-shaped, golden casing. Its significance is that it remains one of the essential parts of the rituals of Tawaf. Pilgrims going for umrah with February Umrah Package or in another month, complete their tawaf and then proceed towards Maqam-e-Ibrahim. Standing behind it, they offer Salat-al-Tawaf.

Construction of the Holy Kaabah.

Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) constructed the Holy Kaabah using rocks from 5 mountains. Namely; Hira, Thubayr, Labnaan, Toor and Jabalul Khayr.
Maqam-e-Ibrahim was the stone on which he (AS) stood while construction. When He (AS) was constructing the Kaabah with his son Hazrat Ismail (AS), as the walls of the Kaabah rose higher, so did the stone. So that Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) can easily continue the construction. ... keep on passing the stones to be placed. Allah Almighty caused the trace of his footprints to remain on the stone and serve as a reminder to the believers among his (AS) descendants.

It also remains mentioned in Hadith that; (description) the stone is the Station of Ibrahim (Maqam-e-Ibrahim). Allah made it soft and a mercy; Ibrahim would stand on it and Ismail would hand the stones up to him.

Acceptance of the wish of Umar (RA).

Hazrat Umar (RA) narrated that Allah Almighty had fulfilled the 3 wishes he had. One of them was his (RA) proposal to Prophet (SAWW) that Maqam-e-Ibrahim should be made a place for performing salah. Allah Almighty accepting his proposal also revealed it in the holy Quran; [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:125].

Location of Maqam, then and now.

During the times of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS), the Maqam-e-Ibrahim was attached to the Holy Kaabah. Hazrat Umar (RA) observed that leaving the stone where it was would make the place too crowded for pilgrims; to perform Tawaf or for offering prayers. Consequently, he (RA) had it moved to the place where it is present now, so to make it easier for people. The matter was decided by a consensus among Sahabah (RA).
The resemblance of Footprints of Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW).

Juhm bin Hudhayfah (RA) said that the blessed footprints of the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) very closely matches those of Ibrahim (AS). In reply to which, Prophet (SAWW) said; (description) From all the children of Ibrahim (AS), it is I (Hazrat Muhammad SAWW) who resembles him (AS) the most.

Performance of Salat-al-Tawaf.

After the completion of 7 circuits of Tawaf, pilgrims are directed to perform 2 Rakat Salat-al-Tawaf behind Maqam-e-Ibrahim; an obligatory ritual of Tawaf.
