The wind blows. The windows rattle. Snowflakes flurry through the air while icicles hang from the trees. Indoors, gardeners and their families seek refuge from the cold. In wintertime, the bright lights of home offer a warm and welcome respite from the snowy weather. In the fairy garden, the glow of a fairy house can do the exact same thing.

The fairies and gnomes try to stay cheerful in the winter months. They bake sweet and spicy cookies. They go sledding up and down the small hills. They even make “snow fairies” in the snowbanks! But when it is time to come in from the cold, they love to return to their warm, glowing fairy houses and gardens that have been lit with soft, welcoming light. How can you bring a little “glow” to your snowy garden or container garden? Here are a few simple ideas:

A Light Inside

Some miniature houses and fairy cottages come equipped with LED lights that light the homes from the inside-out. Usually powered by batteries, these add a glowing element to any indoor or outdoor miniature garden. A few favorite options include a Christmas camper, a moonlit pumpkin house, and ...
... a red barn. These miniature cottages add charm and a glowing sense of “home” to any fairy garden.

Bonus: A stone fire pit can be placed in the backyard of a fairy cottage to create an enchanting outdoor space. The fairies love to warm their hands in front of the “fire” produced by a bulb in the shape of a flame.

Glow in the Garden

Of course, you may also want to add glowing elements for fairies to see as they traverse the paths between cottages or play in the fairy garden at night. Glow-in-the-dark flowers or bees are a quick and easy way to add fun to the miniature garden. Both appear to float above the flowers and greenery while tightly secured in the soil with a pick.

For a garden with less whimsy and more sophisticated appeal, consider orb marbles or pot stickers that also glow in the dark. Simple shapes and rich colors combine to bring a mystical, magical feel to the fairy garden. Miniature accessories like these can be placed randomly throughout the garden or they can be used to mark boundaries near water features, along pathways, and at the entrance to a fairy property.

For a garden feature that will have guests saying “ooh!” and “ahh!”, you may want to invest in a glowing waterfall. This element fits naturally into any miniature garden. Resin boulders and steps build up to an impressive faux waterfall and grassy landscape. At night, the waterfall glows in the dark!

Snowing and Glowing

In some parts of the country, you may have plenty of glow…but a lack of snow! To create your own winter wonderland in the miniature garden, you can use Snowonder, a faux snow product. Just add water to the powder, and you will have artificial snow that lasts for months indoors

After you have secured some softly-glowing snowflakes, whether real or artificial, you can add as many glow-in-the-dark and LED elements as your heart desires. This will put you well on your way towards a miniature garden that looks warm and inviting all winter long.
