When you breakdown, things can seem scary and stressful. There are lots of things you need to think about at the same time and quickly – you need to pull over to safe place, make sure no other cars or your own vehicle is in danger, make sure your car isn’t dangerous to be in, call insurance and a towing company, and more.

Dealing with a car breakdown

If you break down, evaluate your surrounding and try to figure out what the problem is. If you can’t identify the problem, don’t tinker with your car – you could be putting yourself or the car in danger.

• Try and park your car in a safe place – off the road, on flat terrain. Your aim is to stay out of traffic’s way and make sure neither you or the car are blocking the path of other vehicles. If it can not move, do not push the car whilst traffic is around, you will risk a collision. Put out the triangle and turn on your emergency lights.

• Turn on your hazard lights.

• Find out where you are – either the road through satellite navigation systems, or through a local landmark or ...

• Stand in a safe place or sit within the car. Do not stand behind or in front of your vehicle, or on the driver’s side.

• Contact a family member or friend so they know where you are.

• Keep your personal belongings safe and do not get distracted.

• Unless you are a mechanic or know about cars, do not try to fix the issue. Call a towing company, breakdown specialist, or a local mechanic to come and check your vehicle. They could either try to provide immediate roadside assistance or tow your vehicle to a nearby garage.

• If the breakdown is related to an accident or someone is hurt, call emergency services.

• Prepare the necessary documentation – including vehicle registration, insurance card, etc.
