On Kilimanjaro Trekking Tours, hikers choose from six well-trodden climbing routes, which converge towards the summit. Two-thirds opt for Margu or Machame, popularly known as Coca-Cola and Whiskey. The long roads, Rongai, Lemosho, and Shira's quiet reputation, have made irony popular. The longest route, Umbwe, draws some climbers but offers limited potential for significant elevation. All but the Rongai climb the southern face of the mountain, and all climbers descend south.

Choose a route to explore mountain more

Choosing a route to avoid congestion is essential, so my climbing partner and I tested the TK Lemosho - developed by climbers from the family-owned tour operator Kilimanjaro Trip in 2008, a combination of existing routes. By taking a scenic, small detour known as the Northern Circuit to join a section of Lemosho with a part of Rongai, it avoids the busiest areas of the mountain.

An additional few days enables hikers to explore the mountain more and allow more time, but it adds the length of the route (about 86 km) and costs, over £ 2,000 for seven ...
... days all. - Inclusive. Travel along Kilimanjaro Trekking Tours. The cost of the trek varies significantly according to days, group size, operator's reputation, quality of equipment and food, number and experience of guides and porters, and add-ons such as transportation and hotel nights.

Head this way!

After a three-hour drive from Arusha (the center of Northern Tanzania's safari and tourism circuit), our trek began on the Lemosho route in the west via some of the best rainforests of the mountain. A flock of birds and a flock of monkeys, a three-hour climb led us to Big Tree Camp. A sax monkey and about 15 other hikers in a small tented village welcomed us under a large tree inhabited as rain for the evening. The rain continued for the next day, but the atmosphere of the enormous trees dripping with the older adult's beard lichen among the flowers of St. John's only increased.

Eventually, we set out from the forest into a small forest, an enchanting landscape of gray-green bushes, before reaching the Shira camp set along a stream. A cold fog had put us to sleep in our dinner tent, but after some time in the evening, the clouds partially parted, still showing a first view on the distant peak.

On the third day, our route went away from Lemosho, heading north on the Northern Circuit towards Moir Camp. This 8 km walk took us apart from the busy southern face of the mountain and into the air-filled alpine desert. In the afternoon, we hiked a nearby ridge and discovered a waterfall surrounded by alpine plants, including the spiky giant lobelia. The next morning when we came to climb the whole peak from west to east, the waterfall was frozen. This 22 km stretch can be divided into two days, but the area is flat and smooth.

Here how it ends!

The Northern Circuit offers beautiful views through the summits and forests to the summit and a massive plank through the heathlands and forests and to the Kenyan savannah and Ambosali National Park. Fresh buffalo and eland break our way through one of the wildest and remote parts of the mountain trail network. After hiking, we settled at the third cave camp.
