Trekking the Everest Base Camp is often the number one wish on any trekker’s list, thanks to the grandeur and magnificence of the Everest itself. Beyond that, the
Everest Base Camp Trek is a comprehensive trek in itself with the most thrilling adventures, beautiful landscapes, and a variety of experiences.
A lot of people are apprehensive about taking the trek as it is also regarded as one among the most difficult, long route treks. Then there are others who believe that the trek is not too daunting or complicated and instead can be a lot of fun, if it is planned the right way and well in advance.
These can do a lot of good and help you make your Everest Base Camp Trek a smooth one to do. Here are a few tips from some of the experienced trekkers who have been there and done it all. Go through these and simplify your upcoming trek -
1. Carry cash in local currency
As you will trek up the higher altitudes, you will notice there are no ATMs in Namche Bazaar or Lukla. This makes it very important to carry some cash with you at ...
... all times. Ensure that you have a minimum of $200 worth INR at all times with you. Higher exchange rates are another reason you must carry cash in rupees.
2. Consider renting trekking equipment in Kathmandu
Anything and everything that you will need for Everest Base Camp trekking, is available right in Kathmandu. And even though all the products ranging from sleeping bags to trekking poles, to hats to gloves are very cheap, we would recommend that you rent the equipment from here. This way you can cut down on the trekking cost considerably.
3. Carry water purification tablets
Instead of buying water bottles on the trek and burning a hole in your pocket and in the environment, consider carrying water purification tablets or other objects to purify the water. These can include Steripen or other water purifiers.
4. Pack your own treats and teabags
Just like the drinking water, tea and treats such as chips and chocolates are also quite expensive on the Everest Base Camp Trek. It is a good idea to pack a few treats of your choice and teabags in different flavors. You can get hot water easily, at most of the places and buying it is definitely less cheap than buying tea.
5. Let a local tour operator book your tour
It is always a better option to choose a local tour operator to do all the bookings for you. They are well versed with the local landscapes, have years of experience and can hire local porters and guides for you. It is definitely an inexpensive option when compared to booking a tour from another country. All of this can definitely make your trek a smooth ride for you!
6. Always have a few extra days in your itinerary
Always add a few extra days to the regular itinerary required for the Everest Base Camp Trekking. This will not just give you a buffer period for acclimatization (which is quite common and expected on the Everest Base Camp Trek) but you can also check out the local areas or arrange for a few side trips as well.
It might be overwhelming to read so much and pack to perfection for the trek but once you are on the Everest Base Camp Trek, the experience is unmatchable and renders one speechless.
So, the most important tip of all is to ‘enjoy every moment!’ when you are on the trek.
