Mole Removal Scar
Moles are common lesions, dark pigment that can appear on the skin either singularly or in a cluster. They can either be a skin condition that one is born with, or they appear over time. Being exposed to a great deal of sun can also foster the growth of moles.
People choose to remove moles for a variety of reasons. Often, moles are a prelude to skin cancer, and removal is for safety and health reasons. More often than not, moles are merely unsightly and are removed for beauty reasons.
Congenital nevi, which are moles that appear at birth, have a greater chance of developing into melanoma than ones that appear later in life. Dysplastic nevi are larger and more irregular moles with uneven color that also can lead to cancerous cells. However, most moles are not cancerous, but are unsightly and undesirable.
Removing moles can be done using several different procedures. Cutting the mole out can be done with stitches or cauterization, using a special tool that first burns the mole off and then seals the wound. Lasers are also used to remove moles, but are not considered as effective, as they cannot dig beneath ...
... the surface as well as cutting.
There are an assortment of home remedies that claim to remove moles without a procedure, but these treatments are not recommended, if only because a dermatologist will check the mole for any signs of cancer.
Many people do not realize that once moles are removed, they leave a scar. Good dermatologists can and should provide information about the type, size and location of the scar before performing the removal.
Removing mole scars can be a relatively easy procedure, as they can be surgically removed, but there is no treatment that will change the color of the skin. Moles removed with deep cuts are sure to leave behind a scar. Laser removal can also create scarring as the process of removal requires evaporation of the mole tissue through the use of light. The only real removal of a mole that will not leave a deep scar is shaving the mole off at the skin line. This method, however, leaves a partial mole still embedded in the skin which can lead to regeneration of the mole.
In considering having a mole removed, be sure to get information on the potential of the scar. Knowing in advance will help minimize the scarring.
Once the mole has been removed, it is vital to begin treatment of the scar as soon as the wound has been healed to completion. Older mole scars could take months to heal. A variety of creams are available on the market, but silicone gel sheeting seems to work very well in conjunction with a cream.
Scar reduction sheets are made of soft silicone materials that can be shaped to fit the size of the scar. They are designed to apply pressure to the scar to change its appearance. This makes the sheets more effective than gels and other ointments.
