The process of thread milling is essential, especially if you are machining parts that need to connect. While the process of creating threads in metal parts has traditionally been done using specialized taps and dies, thread milling is an extremely efficient way to cut threads in any project you are milling. If you are working with harder materials, such as steel, it’s important to do your Thread Milling With Solid Carbide tools. Carbide tools not only have the strength and hardness needed to mill hard materials, but they also hold their cutting edges well over time.
These days a lot of milling tools are being made with high-speed steel. This material is affordable and will retain its edges longer than your average steel tool, but they still have their issues. Mainly, when operating at high speeds for long enough, these tools can become too hot, causing them to lose their temper and dull faster. If you need a cutter that can work fast and maintain a long tool life, steel won’t cut it.
If you want your tools to last, you ...
... need to start thread milling with solid carbide. Thread milling is a delicate process that requires a sharp cutting edge. Carbide tools can cut threads all day without needing all of the breaks a steel tool would require to cool down. Even at high temperatures, carbide tools will stay hard and sharp. This is because carbide tools are not subjected to the same rules as metal tools.
This is because carbide and metal are very different materials. While it may look metallic, carbide tool stock is actually a combination of metal and ceramic components. The ceramic carbide, a powder in its raw form, has twice the density and stiffness of steel. In order to be made into tools, this powdered carbide is mixed with cobalt metal until the metal melts and the hard carbide particles are dispersed throughout the tool. This material has both the strength of conventional metal tools, but also an increased wear resistance and stiffness due to the carbide.
For thread milling, this added rigidity is crucial. Tools like single pitch thread mills have a single small cutting surface. These tools cut the individual threads on your parts, meaning they can have to put in a lot of work. Solid carbide tools will be able to hold their edges and cut much longer than milling cutters made with other materials. Single pitch mills are ideal for more delicate operations, like cutting threads onto thin or more delicate parts. They can also cut different thread pitches using a single tool, making them pretty versatile end mills.
The other type of thread mill is the full form thread mill. These cutters, whose surface contains rows of the cutting heads seen on single pitch mills, are designed to complete a thread in one rotation. While it rotates, the mill is moved the distance of one thread pitch to make the completed surface threaded rather than just a series of round cuts. These specialized end mills are ideal for cutting multiple thread sizes using the same pitch and cutting threads while chamfering.
If you need to cut threads in your workpieces, make sure you are thread milling with solid carbide. At Online Carbide, we offer high-quality solid carbide tools including a selection of single pitch and full form thread mills. All of our thread milling tools are designed to last and treated with TiAlN for extra heat resistance.
