Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Gatlinburg is known for three entrances to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and hence it is a popular attraction in Tennessee. There are multiple trails for horseback riding, trekking or hiking along with opportunities to see the local flora and fauna. There are budget accommodations in the form of rentals, apartments and lodges that one can book for staying here. The hotels are also available at good prices, some even less than $100. San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio is a modern city with a lot of history, known for its Tex-Mex cuisine. But you don’t need to be a history buff to enjoy this city. Winter and Spring are the best seasons to visit, as summers are warm, and many tourists visit. Visiting in the off season is the best way to save some money on hotels and the like. San Antonio is very family friendly. Around three million tourists visit the Alamo annually. Get around using the extensive bus system which can be light on the pocket. You will find great Mexican food at affordable prices. The downtown can be explored on foot as parking is a problem, but if you plan to somewhere else, other than downtown then a car (own or rented) is a good option. See the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, San Fernando Cathedral, Brackenridge Park and Sea World. The famous River Walk is a pretty area with shops and eateries. You can go on a boat ride or just enjoy the water. Try to take a holiday during weekdays as prices are much lower. Chimichangas, enchiladas, flautas and ceviche are some local specialities that you must try.

Memphis, Tennessee

Known for Blues music, Memphis is known for its musical history and well, barbecue too. It has an exciting nightlife for adults and is fun for kids too. There are accommodation options in a wide price range, and you won’t believe some of the rates charged by hotels – they are really affordable! The city has a good transport infrastructure and you can rent a car too. Many famous musicians have been known to sing in bars here – B.B. King, Johnny Cash and of course Elvis. It also has a bit of history as Martin Luther King Jr. was shot here. The best time to visit is from October to November or April to May. Summers can be humid, but tourists still flock as the schools close for vacation. The most popular delicacy in Memphis is barbecue and there are more than a hundred barbecue joints. Many joints specialise in pork and the sweet and tangy sauces are tantalising. Memphis also has great craft beer. There are freebies such as the Art Museum and the Peabody Hotel duck march. One can also see Sun Studios, Graceland, Stax Museum and Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum at a Backstage Pass price of $84 all combined. The city is distinctly southern with a musical influence and a great place to holiday.

Tucson, Arizona

Want some sunshine on a budget, head to Tucson in Arizona. There are parks and historic sites with great Mexican food to satisfy your taste buds. The sunny city is rooted in heritage and popular for historical attractions. The place has a small-town vibe along with colourful shops and adobe buildings that remind you of a Mexican village. Also, the Catalina Foothills can rival ritzy suburbs. Bars and trendy shops near the university add to its youthful spirit. The best time to visit is September October or April-May. You need to be sure about your duration of stay and make use of budget hotel reservations before you travel. The winter offers comfort while the summer offers great discounts on hotel prices. Try getting the attraction passport which costs $24 for good deals at Saguaro National Park and Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. Do try the tacos, enchiladas and tamales to experience the local cuisine and take advantage of the sunny place!

You can have a great holiday in the USA by planning in advance and booking during off seasons. Many smaller cities have a lower cost of living and hence make travelling on a budget much easier.
