How Wide Is A Pitchers Mound?
Though baseball has been played as a sport in America for nearly 150 years, many players don’t understand (or think about) why the rules and regulations are what they are. Players of all different ages play on fields of different sizes and for good reason.
Adult men are much larger and have much more strength than young beginner players. Thus, the rules and regulations must be more demanding to bring out the best in the players and make for the most competition. However, younger players are both weaker and smaller. They cannot play to the same level of adult men and need rules and regulations adapted for their size and skill level.
One difference that accommodates younger players is the equipment rules. For instance, little league (younger) players can use bats made of many different materials like metal, fiberglass, carbon fiber, and others. However, professional adult baseball players may only use bats made out of wood. There are several other differences in equipment, as well.
Probably the biggest difference in baseball between these two groups is the size of the fields the sport is played on. The bases ...
... are 90 feet apart in professional baseball leagues, but are only 60 feet apart for little league players. And, the minimum distance a fence can be from home plate to count a homerun in professional baseball is 250 feet. However, younger players only need to hit a baseball 165 feet to get a homerun.
Another difference in field dimensions between older and younger players is the pitcher’s mound. The distance a pitcher must throw the ball to the batter in a professional baseball league is 60 feet and 6 inches from the front edge of the pitcher’s mound to the rear of home plate. The same measurement on a little league field is only 46 feet. The pitching rubber on which an adult player stands is 6 inches deep and 2 feet wide. But, in little leagues the pitching rubber can be as small as 18 inches wide (still 6 inches deep). The reason for this is the narrower pitching mound.
The size of the pitching mound on which the pitching rubber sits for younger players is usually between 6-8 inches tall and 9-10 feet in diameter. However, sometimes the pitchers mound for younger players is narrower in width than length. This compares to the full-size pitching mound of a professional baseball field which is exactly 18 feet in diameter all around and 10 inches tall.
Because the pitching mound size can vary between ages and skill levels, AllStar Mounds makes high-quality portable pitching mounds to accommodate games played by these difference groups of players all on the same field. For example, a group of players just beginning to play baseball could use Beginner Pitching Mound AllStar #1, then that mound could be replaced with the Pony League Pitching Mound AllStar #4 for more advanced young baseball players and a second baseball field would not be needed!.
