The New Wave Among Indian Students Of Going Abroad For Studies

Whether it is an ambition of career advancement or willingness to improve educational track record, studying in foreign universities becomes a major trend among Indian students. A report named Indian Applicants: Ambition, Competition and Fight for Employment concludes that intense competition in employability in Indian market is one of the reason for the student to study abroad. Another report named Indian Applicants: Focus on STEM Subjects and Academic Freedom found Indian students are overwhelmingly enthusiastic to study courses like business and STEM field with a desire to improve Indian economy. However, the tide of going abroad is shifted in last few years as more numbers of students started to prefer Australia as their study destination. Initially, US were the prominent foreign study destination for Indian students, which has been reduced drastically after Australia, Middle East and UK universities started to provide more opportunities for the students.

... Further statistics reveal that five major preferable destinations are United Sates, Canada, Australia, Saudi Arabia and United Arab emirates. In the latest data published from Ministry of External affairs, 211,703 numbers of students are studying in USA, 124,000 numbers of students are studying in Canada, 87,115 numbers of students are studying in Australia, 70,800 numbers of students are studying in Saudi Arabia and 50,000 students are studying in UAE. However, Germany and Ireland are yet to be built as study destinations for Indian students because of the engineering and technology courses.
Canada has seen most numbers of growths in terms on Indian students’ mobility because of safety, cost and easy immigration policies. Data collected from UNESCO and education ministry of Canada revealed that during the period of 2005/06 to 2015/16, the numbers of Indian students increased by 6.5 times. Australian also achieved potential growth in the last decade after including a 10 years national strategy for international education, which specially targets Chinese and Indian students. The policy has also improved students’ visa policies with streamlining efforts, reduced financial obligations while applying for student visa and providing access for two year post study work visa.
