If you are trekking in Nepal, the Gokyo Lakes Trek should be there on your To-Do list, definitely. We mean… it has to be!
We are talking about six glacial lakes that are rated as some of the highest freshwater lakes, thanks to their high altitudes of 4700 m and 5000m. And believe us, they are spectacular in beauty.
If you are taking up the Everest Base Camp Trek, a side trip will take you to the Gokyo Lakes. And the amalgamation of adventure and beauty does not just end there. On your way to Gokyo Lakes, you can also have some of the most varied experiences and view breathtaking panoramas. There are several key tourist attractions on the way that make the journey as beautiful as the destination.
While there is a lot more on the itinerary, these are the top 6 things you should absolutely not miss when on Gokyo Ri Trek.
1. Gokyo Ri
Since it is the Gokyo ri trek we are talking about, we cannot miss the quintessential Gokyo Ri, the highest peak at 5357 meters. You will get the best view of Mt. Everest since it is also the closest view ...
... of the peak. The other peaks that you can view from here are Makalu, Lhotse and Cho Oyu.
2. Dudh Koshi River
The Dudh Koshi River also called the Sapt Koshi River since it is a confluence of seven different rivers is a major attraction on the Gokyo Ri Trek. What makes it special other than its milky white water is the fact that it is the highest river in the context of elevation. The river flows through the Sagarmatha National Park and accompanies the trekkers on most parts of the
Everest Base Camp Trek. One can enjoy gripping views of Kumbhu Himal from the river and enjoy kayaking in its pristine waters.
3. Sagarmatha National Park
Another must-visit destination on the Gokyo Ri Trek is the Sagarmatha National park in the Solukhumbu District. The park is spread across a large area of 1148 sq kilometers and is positioned in the elevation between 2845 meters and 8848 meters. The park houses 118 different species of birds and endangered animals. If you get lucky, you can see Snow Leopards, Himalayan Black Bears and Musk deer here.
4. Namche Bazaar
Namche Bazaar is a small town in the Khumbu District of Nepal. It is not just the first step to Himalaya but a hub for the trekkers and tourists for different reasons. It is popular for altitude acclimatization, is a great shopping destination, and has the best views of Ama Dablam, Mt. Everest, and other similar ranges. Restaurants, Cafes, Lodges, Internet Cafes, German Bakeries…you name it and the town has it!
5. Gokyo Village
At an unbelievable altitude of 4750 meters, Gokyo Village is the highest area of settlement across the world. This beautiful village in the laps of Himalayas is also the home to the popular six Gokyo Lakes that are spectacularly beautiful and make for a picture-perfect landscape with high peaks in the background. The major population of the village is formed by Hindus and Buddhists.
6. Cho La Pass
Cho La Pass is another major attraction that lies on the Gokyo trail that runs across the Khumbu Everest Region. This Summit Pass is located at an altitude of 5420 meters and is regarded as the hardest part of the trek. There are several villages surrounding the pass that are beautiful settlements and form a tourist attraction for the same reason. These include Gokyo Valley, Thangnak, Machherma, and Dzongla.
