We've heard countless people say that they'll just handle their interior house painting themselves, because why not? After all, they have weekends free and could be a little more active. It's certainly not impossible to handle such a project on your own, but there are a number of steps you should know about and follow before you can being painting the interior of your house like one of the pros.

1) Protect Your Furniture

What you don't want to end up with is beautifully painted walls and ceilings, but paint splatter and drops over every piece of furniture in the house. One option is to empty the room completely, moving any pieces to another room while the work is being done. You can also move items from one end of the room to the other, doing one half at a time. Moving everything to the very centre of the room is a solid choice if you're also planning on covering everything with plastic, which we would recommend for the messier amateur painters out there.

2) Protect the Floors

We just mentioned covering the furniture in plastic, but you should definitely do the same for your floors. Use either drop ...
... sheets or plastic to ensure that you won't be scraping paint off of your hardwood floors later, or worse yet trying to get it out of your carpet. In the event that this project isn't for you, but for a friend or family member, this step will help ensure that you're looking out for their property and want it to look its best when you're done.

3) Prepare All Surfaces

The first step when it comes to actually painting, your mission is to ensure that all surfaces are smooth and free of cracks, depressions, or any other irregularities. Holes should be filled, and any bumps are to be sanded down with rough sandpaper, after which the whole surface should be gone over with a fine sandpaper. Don't forget to clean the area of any dust once you're finished!

4) Prime All Surfaces

You're still not done, however. The next step is to prime all surfaces being painted. In the event that they are already primed, and you had to do a lot filling and caulking, simply spot prime all of those areas. Typically a latex primer is used, as most homes will already be painted using latex paint. "We highly recommend using a primer called STIX for all interior painting jobs to have a better result." said Mike G., Founder and CEO of Royal Home Painters Toronto. If there are heavy stains or odour from smoking or cooking there are certain primers that can help deal with these issues.

5) Start Painting

Time to finally get down to it! Make things much easier for yourself by painting in the corners and edges with a brush first. Once that's done you can use a tray and roller to take on the large areas that you've framed for yourself. Most walls will require two coats, but three may be necessary if you're going from a very dark colour to a light one, or vice versa. Remember to allow ample time to dry between coats!

Trim is usually painted with a brush and not a roller, and as a result takes a very long time. That's also due to the fact that maintaining hard, straight lines may be more difficult for the inexperienced. Ceilings are likewise very challenging as a ladder will be required, and the whole room should be covered or emptied to keep your belongings safe from falling paint.

6) Clean Everything Up

After the final coat of paint has dried it's time to clean up. Some dust may need to be vacuumed, and stray drops of paint may also need to be addressed as well. Throw out any garbage and plastic drop sheets, but hold on to any extra paint! It will come in handy if you need to do touch-ups at a later date. Once all that's done don't forget to move the furniture back to its original place.
