ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number. It is a distinct numeric identifier for commercial books. Earlier, it used to be a 9 digit number but since January 1, 2007, it has become a 13 digit number. You may find some books without such identifiers. These are privately printed books or the author may not have followed the typical procedure of numbering books. But, this is later subject to verification.

Every 13-digit International Standard Book Number comprises 5 parts:

*Group identifier
*Publisher code
*Serial number of item (book title)
*Check digit

The parts are separated by either a space or hyphen. Only the check digit has a fixed number of digits. Check digit is a kind of redundancy check for detection of errors.
