What Is The Importance Of Arafat During Hajj

In the plain of Arafat, 22 kilometres East of Makkah, lies Mount Arafat. Also known as ‘Mount of Mercy’ It is 70 meters in Height. The region is of great significance to Muslims. It’s the place where Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) delivered the Farewell Sermon and its also the region where all the people would gather on the Day of Judgement. In addition, spending the 9th of Dhul Hijjah at Arafat is one of the most vital rituals and obligations for pilgrims during hajj. That’s why its better known as the “Day of Arafah”. Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) narrated that the true essence of Hajj is Arafah.

Here’s a brief description of the importance of Arafat During Hajj;

Rituals on the Day of Arafah.

Staying at Arafah is one of the primary and most essential rituals of hajj. If a pilgrim fails to spend the required time in Arafah and perform relevant rituals, the Hajj would become Invalid. Here’s a short detail of rituals for pilgrims on the day of Arafah.

1. After praying Salat-al-Fajr in Mina, pilgrims must move towards the plain of Arafat on the 9th day of Dhul Hijjah.

3. Pilgrims must recite Talbiyah, Takbeer, Tahleel, and Tasbih when going from Mina to the plain of Arafat.
4. After reaching Arafah, the pilgrims engage in making Dua to Allah and cry seeking forgiveness from the Almighty.
5. Combining the 2 Salah with one Adhan and two Iqama, pilgrims will pray Dhuhr and Asr here.
6. Pilgrims will stay at Arafat until sunset because it is obligatory. Otherwise, a penalty is due.
7. Just after sunset, pilgrims must leave Arafat to make their way to Muzdalifah.

What Non-Pilgrims can do?

For people who are not present at hajj, here is a little something they can participate with on the Day of Arafah.
Fasting. In the light of Hadith, it remains recommended for non-pilgrims to fast on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, the Day of Arafah. However, prohibited for pilgrims.
Recite Takbir. Non-pilgrims can also take part in hajj by reciting the same Takbir that pilgrims are reciting.

Importance of Arafah in Islamic History.

Allah Almighty Perfected the Religion.

It remains narrated in the Holy Quran that on this day Allah almighty perfected the religion “Islam”. [Surah Al-Maa’idah 5:3]. Umar (RA) also said that these Ayahs were revealed to Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) at Arafah on a Friday (during hajj).

It’s the Day of Forgiveness.

Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) said that the best Dua is the one made on the Day of Arafah. He (PBUH) also narrated that there is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire of Hell than the Day of Arafah.
