We are talking about Protein! It’s easier to convince men to eat more protein snacks because obviously, who doesn’t want to look like a muscular hunk?! Women are worried about the same thing - getting too muscular. Did you know? Proteins are needed if you want to get preggers. Read on to know how silently protein is helping you ladies!

Why are we sounding the alarm? The stats about the consumption of protein in women says it all. Sometimes, all it takes is a protein bar or any other protein snack.

Women and Protein consumption.

Indians are anyway deficient in proteins, almost 80% of them. Of this, women fare worse. A survey found that women consume 13% lesser proteins than men.

Here are some more disturbing facts from IMRB’s study among Indians to understand protein-related myths and facts:
• Working women and also housewives have 70-80% protein deficiency. Go figure!
• 62% of breastfeeding and pregnant women are deficient in protein. The time it is needed the most.
• 48% of mothers of 8-15-year-olds ...
... DO NOT associate protein with good health. Great way to foster the new-gen.
Impossible! But we eat so much, don’t we? Yes, mostly carbs from cereals, fats and sugary foods. The urban population is guilty of not choosing the right foods in spite of having the monetary means to eat more healthy foods.

So, where is the Protein? 1 bowl of dal or weekend indulgence of chicken/fish doesn’t count for much. Ladies, you need a modest 0.8 grams to 1 gram of protein per kg of bodyweight? Too much expectation from that 1 bowl of dal or 1 glass of milk in a day.

Here’s why Ladies need Protein too!

In a nutshell, to ovulate well for starting a family; to ward off osteoporosis (most common in women); to keep off diabetes and weight gain; and more cosmetically, to look younger forever. Lets delve a bit deeper on this

1. Muscle and bone health
Did you know, protein is needed for absorption of calcium and hence keeps bones healthy? Lack of protein and muscle mass is a recipe for frequent fractures, falls and ultimately osteoporosis.
Here’s a tip from Reader’s Digest, if your collar bones are visible, time to stock up on proteins to build muscle. The active tissue keeps you active and helps you wear many hats!

2. Regularize cycle and help with PCOS
PCOS is among the most frequent causes for irregular menstrual cycle and infertility. A low protein and high carb diet (like the survey shows) is responsible for this. Moreover, all your sex hormones like estrogen, progesterone and DHEA are nothing but protein! Do we need to say more?

3. Great for losing weight
Obesity is the root cause of many lifestyle diseases. Just by increasing your protein intake, you can ensure higher satiety (that feeling of being full hours after lunch), greater metabolism (body burning off calories even when resting), and better physical tone (thank you, muscle).

4. Keeps mood swings and anxiety in check
All your neurotransmitters and the ‘feel ood’ hormones are protein. Women are traditionally considered as being in a foul mood forever. Guess they never ate their proteins!

5. Prevent hair loss and skin aging

Skin, hair, nails, organs, hormones and our very being is protein. Here’s a scary fact, those who are deficient in protein age 3-4 times faster than those eating their proteins regularly.

6. Great immunity
Imagine dancing in the rain or prancing in the snow. Or eating a pani puri when it drizzles?! You can do all that with great immunity which is the best gift a regular protein intake can bestow.

How to eat more proteins?

It’s simple, ensure every meal has a protein element in it. For example, you could go for meal replacement bar. Also, a bowl of dal stays during lunch but can supplement it with another bowl of curd. Snacks are the time when proteins are hardly present (think upma, poha, dosa etc). You could grab a protein bar like Naturell’s RiteBite Protein bars which not only has protein but also fibre. That’s smart snacking and smart nutrition for everyone, especially you ladies!
