With the onset of winter months, problems like common cold, cough, and flu are becoming widespread. In such a scenario, protecting yourself as well as your voice is necessary. This is especially important for you if you want to pursue a singing career or are already doing so.

Given below is a list, carefully curated to help you maintain your melodious voice even in the harsh and cold weather:

Stay hydrated -
Many people are under the misconception that drinking a lot of water in winters can cause your throat to dry out and make your voice sound mechanical. This is certainly not true! It is very important to religiously consume water even in winters so that your body's water levels do not drop below the bare minimum. However, chilled or ice-cold water has the potential to form cough inside your throat. Make sure you avoid cold water and drink regular room temperature or lukewarm water to keep your voice smooth.

Practice vocals -
A famous proverb says that practice makes a man perfect. If not perfect, then practising your singing will help in brushing up your skills and enhancing voice quality. ...
... Many people who secured singing opportunities in Bollywood have emphasized on the fact that regular practice can be extremely advantageous. Day by day singing improves your pronunciation skills and adds a certain accent to your vocals. By introducing a variety in the types of songs you sing, you can learn the basics of multiple singing styles and attain expertise in whichever field you wish to.

Tea to the rescue -
While there are no magical teas that can instantly cure your sore throat, drinking a variety of herbal teas can prove to be very beneficial in the long run. Some teas contain therapeutic spices and herbs that help in reducing the swelling in the throat. Green tea, chamomile tea, ginger tea and the likes are not only rich in antioxidants but also help in detoxifying your entire system. This helps in achieving a sweeter voice.

Gargling with saline liquids -
This is an extremely common remedy in India used to treat the upset throat. Colds, allergies and a stuffy throat can all be cleared out by gargling warm water mixed with salt. This solution is also available in the form of nasal sprays. However, opting for the traditional gargle can heal your throat in a faster and more effective manner.

Avoiding certain food items -
Any kind of dairies like milk, butter, cheese, curd and other similar products can do more harm than good. As they have a cooling effect on your body, you might not be able to touch your high notes while singing. Other than that, food items that include excessive caffeine, too much sugar, high levels of spice or even chocolate can cause an increase in phlegm, acid reflux and affects your voice. Thus, it is best to avoid those if you have a show or auditions coming up.
