In 1986, a Bengal breeder by the name of Judee Frank decided to try her luck in crossbreeding a male Serval, owned by Suzi Woods, with a female Siamese domestic cat. The attempt was successful in producing the very first Savannah cat breed (named Savannah, of course) on April 7, 1986. Since the, these cats have been a hot commodity for breeders and individuals that wish to keep them as pets, and despite their very exotic appearance the Savannah cat is very much like the domestic house cat when it comes to love and care.

Before bringing your new Savannah kitten home you will need to make a special place for him/her to feel safe and secure. Be sure to place a litter box in the same area with food and water bowls. A cat bed is a great idea for the cat, as well. You will need to be prepared to keep your new Savannah isolated for a minimum of two weeks in order for it to get comfortable with its new surroundings. The cat will also need this time to get used to the new family it has. A Savannah needs to feel the safety and security of its new home in order to develop its unique personality. Savannah cats should usually be ...
... kept indoors due to their natural instincts to roam as wild cats. Taking them outside on a leash for walks and fresh air is recommended on a daily basis.

Dietary needs, behavioral facts

A Savannah cat's diet usually consists of what the breeder had been feeding it before you brought it home. They can be fed a diet of premium wet and dry cat food but some owners and breeders prefer to feed them a more natural diet. Purchasing a high quality nutritional supplement is also a great idea. You will need to be sure that you are feeding the kitten the same kind of food that it has been accustomed to. You can discuss this with the breeder that you receive the kitten from in order to know what type of food to purchase. You will need to transition the kitten slowly out of its normal food for a period of no less than 30 days, and then you will be able to decide which food you want to continue to feed the cat, whether it is going to be regular cat food or a natural diet.

An important thing to remember with Savannah kittens is that you should not allow them to do things that you would not want a full-grown cat to do. Savannahs are known to be very good when it comes to boundaries if taught from an early age. Methods for enforcing good behavior with your Savannah are strategized in a couple of ways. You can use a squirt bottle filled with water, and firmly tell the kitten "no!” and squirt them in the face at the same time to teach them what not to do. Another way is to pick the kitten up by the scruff of the neck while also telling them 'no!' at the same time, which teaches them quite well, too. If you are consistent with these methods and do them in repetition, you will have success. Be patient with Savannahs as they are very intelligent and will catch on to boundaries very quickly.

Getting along with others

Savannahs are usually very gentle in nature and have been known to behave very well with children and other pets you might have in the home. However, it is best, if you do have other cats or pets in the home, to keep Savannahs isolated from the others for at least two weeks. This will allow the Savannah to feel safe until it is ready to meet the rest of the pets in the family. This will also assure you that the Savannah will get along well with its new friends.

Finally, be sure that before you bring your new Savannah home that it is fully vaccinated and either spayed or neutered. Vaccinations can prevent feline panleukopenia, rhinotracheitis and calicivirus, among other things. A booster should be given to the Savannah at the age of one year. These methods will ensure that the cat maintains its health and will not breed with any other cats you might have in the home.
