Lightweight, High Strength, Silver Chemical Element
Titanium is an element in its own right. Many metals can be alloyed with titanium. Common alloying elements are aluminium, vanadium and molybdenum. Titanium is not found in its native state but mostly as its oxide. Titanium is the ninth most abundant element on earth. It is almost always present in igneous rocks and the sediments derived from them. It occurs in the minerals ilmenite, rutile and sphere and is present in many iron ores. It is present in meteorites, the sun, and other stars. It is a transition metal with a lustrous silver-white colour and high strength. Titanium is as strong as steel but much less dense, yet it is 45% lighter. The metal is also 60% denser than aluminium but is over two times as strong. Compared to other metals, at its cost, there is a very good market for it. Titanium is being increasingly used in our modern society. Architectural applications of titanium still exist. Titanium dioxide is by far the most important of the compounds of titanium and accounts for the largest use of the metal.
PropeRties & application:
It is a corrosion-resistant due to the presence of a thin oxide coating ...
... on the surface of the metal.
Due to excellent resistance to seawater, it is used in off-shore rigs, ships propellers and desalination plants.
Because It is lightweight, stable, heat-resistant and easy to work with, it also finds many uses in aviation and aerospace applications.
The human body does not reject titanium, so it can be used for joint replacement and tooth implants
It alloys are also used in eyeglass frames.
Titanium has only recently been included as a jewellery material and is increasingly popular.
uses including white paints, sunscreens, infrared reflectors, cake icing and self-cleaning glass
Prosthetics, tennis rackets, goalie masks, scissors, bicycle frames, surgical tools, mobile phones
It dioxide increases the paint's whiteness and reflectivity. Titanium dioxide also increases the paint's opacity,
Researchers are poised to fundamentally change the titanium industry, through developing a way to make less expensive titanium.
Unless handled carefully the titanium binds with air at high temperatures and becomes brittle and weaker
So titanium is special because it is beautiful, strong, lightweight, highly resistant to corrosion, practically non-magnetic and bio-compatible.
It has good heat-transfer properties. Its coefficient of thermal expansion is somewhat lower than that of steels and less than half that of aluminium.
It can be passivated, and thereby exhibit a high degree of immunity to attack by most mineral acids and chlorides
It is non-toxic and generally biologically compatible with human tissues and bones
It is not a good conductor of electricity. Titanium is not used where good conductivity is a prime factor
Electrical resistance is the opposition a material presents to the flow of electrons. Since titanium is a poor conductor, it follows that it is a fairly good resistor.
