Titanium is an element in its own right. Many metals can be alloyed with titanium. Common alloying elements are aluminium, vanadium and molybdenum. Titanium is not found in its native state but mostly as its oxide. Titanium is the ninth most abundant element on earth. It is almost always present in igneous rocks and the sediments derived from them. It occurs in the minerals ilmenite, rutile and sphere and is present in many iron ores. It is present in meteorites, the sun, and other stars. It is a transition metal with a lustrous silver-white colour and high strength. Titanium is as strong as steel but much less dense, yet it is 45% lighter. The metal is also 60% denser than aluminium but is over two times as strong.
