Importance Of Cave Of Hira In Islam

At a distance of about 10 Kilometres from Masjid-al-Haram, in Hejaz Region of Saudi Arabia, the cave of Hira is situated at a height of 270m on Jabal-e-Noor. The mountain itself is 3 kilometers from Makkah. The area here has nothing but uneven land and un-grown, thorny bushes. The elevation of the mountain (peak) is also slippery and straight. The Cave of Hira measures almost 3.7 meters in length and 1.60 meters in width. The cave holds great significance in Islamic history. Islam originated from here.

Spiritual Meditation of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW)

Before the first revelation, Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) was in the habit of going to the cave of Hira for spiritual Meditation. He (PBUH) would gather some supplies (food, water and other things) and go to the calm and peaceful environment of the cave of Hira, alone. There he (SAWW) spent days and nights in the remembrance of Allah and praying until his supplies finish. He would then return home, again collect the supplies and repeat the meditation process.

That included lack of concern and kindness for the less fortunate i.e. orphans, an increase in decadent behavior, ill-treatment of women, and concern with wealth that led to cheating and abuses. Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) would think about the solutions to alleviate all such problems.

First Revelation of the Quran

At the age of forty years, in the month of Ramadan, on the night of Laylat al-Qadr, Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) was busy in his prayers in the cave of Hira. He was busy meditating. Jibril (AS) came and revealed the first-ever verses of the Holy Quran. The first 5 verses of Surah Al-Alaq were revealed. (Surah 96; Verse 1-5).

After the revelation, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) was overwhelmed and scared at the same time. He ran from the cave and directly went to his wife Hazrat Khadijah (RA) for comfort. He (PBUH) then told his wife about the incident and everything that has happened. She (RA) encouraged him and told him that his vision was true, with his character Allah Almighty would never humiliate or fail him in his mission.

The Prophecy started which then lasted for almost 23 years. Islam started spreading. The nation was once again on the right path. Until then, the whole of the Holy Quran was enclosed in the heart of Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH).
