Islam’s fundamental base is on 5 pillars. Namely; Kalma (Tauheed), Namaz (Prayer), Roza (Fasting), Zakat and Hajj. Hajj being the 5th pillar of Islam is an obligation on Muslims who can afford it both in terms of health and money. As it includes international traveling expenses, Food and Accommodation expenditures, Transportation arrangements and Medicines there. On the other hand, Hajj itself also requires good bodily strength and stamina for the performance of rituals.

In simple words, Hajj isn’t a compulsion for every Muslim but for the one who possesses the financial means to sponsor it as well as have the mental and physical health for it. With a variety of low cost hajj packages available in the market, Millions of Muslims go for hajj every year.

Permissibility of Hajj

1. People who don’t have the financial means but possess the health for it

Muslims who possess the health for Hajj but don’t have the monetary means for it, don’t necessarily have to perform Hajj. i.e. Hajj isn’t obligatory ...
... on such people. They can wait till they have enough savings (halaal) to go for Hajj and not go at all if the financial goal isn’t accomplished. However, going for hajj by taking a loan is neither recommended nor required in Islam but under certain conditions.

2. People who possess resources but don’t have the health for performing Hajj

For wealthy people who have the financial capability of performing hajj but not the physical/mental ability, hajj is still an obligation on them but in a different manner. That is, if they cannot go for hajj themselves then they must sponsor somebody to perform the hajj in their names (Niyyah). In short, such people must bear all the flight, travel, living, and other expenses of the person they are sponsoring to perform hajj. Allah Almighty will reward both of them equally, as he is the provider of all.

3. With Loan Money

Hajj with loan money is neither required nor recommended in Islam. Yet, if a person has a consistent and decent income and is able to repay the loan (interest-free) on the specified time and period, then he/she can go for hajj with loan money. i.e. Hajj remains valid. However, the permission of the creditor is a necessity.

In this case, again, one must not opt for burdening itself with debt by taking out a loan for hajj. As no one of us has the assurity of living tomorrow, or even the next minute. So, one must only take out a loan (interest-free) for hajj if he/she has the assurity that loan would be repaid even after its death i.e. has a consistent source of income (Rent, Heritage, Property, etc.)

4. Haram or Doubtful Money

If a rich person has the suspicion that the wealth he/she possess contains elements of haram or doubtful money, then it is usually advised to borrow money from someone for hajj and repay the loan with its own wealth after the return. Indeed, Allah is the most merciful

Hajj with loan money isn’t preferred. Neither required nor recommended in Islam. So, one must only perform hajj when he/she has sufficient financial as well as bodily means for it.
