E-cigarettes and vaping devices, like Juul, have become a popular pastime for smokers and even individuals with no previous smoking experience, including teens. With sleek designs and enticing flavors, the e-cigarette and vape marketing is booming.

Once thought of as a better alternative than smoking cigarettes, studies now show e-cigarettes and vape pens expose users to dangerous health risks. In the study, hundreds of electronic cigarettes were analyzed.

The Findings

Generally, e-cigarettes contain a lower dose of nicotine than cigarettes, ranging from 6 to 30 milligrams of nicotine per milliliter of liquid. Juul, however, contains a much higher concentration – 59 milligrams of nicotine per milliliter of liquid.

According to Juul Labs, one Juul pod contains about the same amount of nicotine as one pack of cigarettes. Juuls do not have filters so users are exposed to 100% of the nicotine whereas cigarettes lose some of the nicotine in the filter. The high doses of nicotine that Juul users are taking in puts users are risk for injuries and nicotine addiction.

The research study concluded ...
... that the high levels of nicotine concentrations found in Juul e-cigarettes are “sufficiently high to be cytotoxic, or toxic to living cells when test in vitro with cultured respiratory system cells.”

The CDC Speaks Out

After the first death related to severe lung disease from electronic cigarettes and vaping devices, the Centers for Disease Control has released a statement:

“Vaping exposes users to many different substances for which we have little information about related harms –including flavorings, nicotine, cannabinoids, and solvents. CDC has been warning about the identified and potential dangers of e-cigarettes and vaping since these devices first appeared. E-cigarettes are not safe for youth, young adults, pregnant women, or adults who do not currently use tobacco products.” Robert R. Redfield, MD, Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
