Of course, when it works for you (which could very well be all the time), we're all for bending design rules, but sometimes getting a few guidelines to follow will allow you the flexibility to fine-tune your imagination in other ways. It's here to weigh twice, cut once, and trust you! If you want to do things right the first time around, here are five rules for interior design.

1. Avoid Awkward Curtain Length

Hanging too short or too long curtain panels is equivalent to wrapping yourself in unfitting clothing. "Measure twice, cut once" applies here — take the time to plan before you split the scissors and sewing machine by measuring and marking the rod position.

Here are two simple rules regarding curtain length that almost always work on any window:

Hang your rod level, at least halfway between your ceiling and the top of your window.

Measure (twice!), cut and hem your panels so they just graze the floor when hung.

2. Choose Properly-Scaled Rugs

If you've not made that mistake, you've seen it many times ... and rightly so. Rugs can be expensive, and the larger it is, ...
... the more costly it is. While the price is definitely something to consider, however, we would venture to say that money is not always the cause of this (too strong?) epidemic. You may have found the most exquisite antique kilim rug you're sure you can "make a living," or your favorite home decor store is selling on the rug you've been obsessed with ... but the only one left is a 5′ x 7′. DON'T DO IT (unless you intend to spread it over a rug that is appropriately scaled). No rug is better than an almost miniature rug shocked by all of your things of human size.

A good rule of thumb is to pick a rug that matches all of your existing furniture in the right scale for your room (see illustration). Natural fiber rugs such as jute and sisal, as well as most IKEA rugs, offer great, affordable options on a large scale.

3. Picking a Cohesive Color Palette

If you design the hodgepodged "What's Left" room of the Madonna Inn, making a space feel seamless is likely to be your main priority when designing a design scheme. Choosing a color palette and applying it uniformly throughout a room is a foolproof way to make sure that your space is all set.

4. Hanging Art Work at Eye Level

If you have a blank wall and an art stack that begs to touch, resist the urge to pick up your hammer without a little planning work. A good rule of thumb is that most works of art look best hung where the art center for most people is between 57′′-60′′ (around eye level). From there, the walls of the gallery look best hung on a uniform grid where all frames are the same size or one focal piece surrounded by a variety of sizes.

5. Varying Your Light Sources

When all of your lightings comes from one bright source at one location (i.e. recessed lighting overhead), it will fall flat. Placing multiple soft lights in a variety of locations improves the atmosphere and creates warmth and depth.
