National Eligibility cum entrance test as the name suggests this test is conducted on all India bases. This test is conducted for those students who aspire to become an MBBS doctor (medical practitioner). Earlier there used to be PMT (Pre-medical test) conducted by most of the states and the PMT test was limited to each state separately. In some states like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Karel, etc where this test was not conducted for the selection of students for MBBS admission. The students were selected based on their 10+2 marks by preparing a merit list starting from the highest mark holder to the lower side until the admission seats were not finally filled.

Those states conducting the PMT used to have a proper Board and a Nodal agency to conduct the test for admission to the MBBS course in the state. Each student desirous to study MBBS used to fill the application form along with requisite rules and criteria for eligibility. The basic criteria were one should have passed 10+2 or have appeared in 10+2 exam but the result is awaited, was eligible to appear the test. It was mandatory on the part of students that they ...
... have studied science stream with physics, chemistry, biology, and English as a subject in their 10+2 exam and pass percentage to appear for PMT was minimum 50% aggregate in PCB for general/open students and up to 40% for those students who belong to OBC, SC, and ST category.

The question in PMT was based on physics, chemistry, biology subjects of 12th standard. After the exam was over and the valuation of papers completed, a merit list used to be prepared to start from the highest rank holder to the lower rank holder till all vacant seats were filled.

There used to be separate merit lists each for the open/general category and reserved category students. Based on the merit list the students used to be called for counseling/interview and the higher rank holder student had ample opportunity to select the medical college of his / her choice. Likewise on after, the other collages were locked for admission by students based on the merit system. This system applied only to government medical colleges.

For private medical colleges, the basic criteria for admission of holding 50% marks or 40 % marks in their 10 +2 exam were the same as in earlier case but the ultimate decision as to who will be selected against the seat was lying under sole decision a private medical college management committee.aspiring students had to pay a huge amount as capitation fee/donation money to the college and the amount was subject to the discretion of the private medical college were admission was sought.

Elegance for malpractice was raised several times in both the admission system i,e one from govt. college and another for private college indicating several irregularities in the admission process. Apart from this, there were no similarities in the level of marks and admission process adopted in each state. Even the doctors passed out from one state used to have a lot of difficulties to work in other states if they want to join. Like doctors studied from Maharashtra were permitted to work only in the state of Maharashtra. As we know the national body responsible to control medical education in India was MCI which was responsible to check the infrastructure of the medical colleges along with functional hospitals of a minimum of 300 beds. medical college and hospitals must be fully equipped with all the necessities of medical standard teaching staff will be highly qualified and all other systems fully in place and functional. Those collages met the basic criteria used to get a license to start a medical college. Each medical colleges were allotted with the seat according to their infrastructure.

The inspection was carried out by MCI each year of the different medical colleges to see that acceptable standard was maintained by the concerned medical college otherwise there recommendation to run the medical college was withdrawn. At the state level, there was state medical council mostly in each state and to maintain there rules and procedures they used to clash with each other.

Indruction of Natrional Elibilty Cum enrtanceTest

Keeping all these problems and disparity in the admission system in the MBBS course in India the central govt decided to formulate a common policy to work at a national level and for the same reason, a new body called NTA (National Testing Agency )was created. NTA is a nodal test conducting agency that conducts the examination on all India basis. The language for an exam is English a part of some local languages, especially in south India in which students can write the test. At the national level, the test is called NEET. The applicable criteria to appear in the NEETis more or less the same as in the case of PMT. Physics, chemistry, and biology are the main subject of the test. Merit system is adopted in the selection of students. Students are given the privilege of state quota as 85% and national quota as 15%. Therefore they can get admission not only in their own state but also in other states in national quota. If they qualify in merit.
Separate merit prepared for the general category and OBC category. The present system of admission through NEET mainly differs from the previous PMT system in a way that NEET has taken over all the seats of government and as well as private medical colleges for admission. Director general medical education (DGLE) has been appointed in each state by the concerned state govt who not only controls the admission process along with its staff but also decides the fee of all the private medical colleges of his states depending upon the intrastate and the standard of the collages. That is why the FEE of each medical college in the same state differs according to their rank and infrastructure.

Those students who score high marks out of 720 marks allotted in the test are given priority and are called for counseling in each category like General/OBC. Those who score comparatively fewer marks in NEET examination are called in descending order of merit and alloted with medical seats after counseling. They can choose the private medical college of their choice and the MBBS fee along with food and host prescribed for that medical college has to be born by the students which maybe somewhere maybe 55lahs to 90 lakhs as total study expenditure..

Introduction of NEXT(Nation Exit Test)

Neet has been made compulsory for everyone desirous to study MBBS, Weather in India or abroad. The criteria for abroad medical admission is a little easier. Those who score even minimum qualifying marks in neet test are allowed to go abroad and study. The minimum qualifying marks in NEET for the General category was 134 and OBC category 109 in the year 2019 Test. Now according to the present rule the students need not apply eligibility and submit the eligibility application form in MCI. They can directly proceed to a foreign destination for MBBS in Abroad
since they have a cleared neet test. After the completion of their degree when they return back to India, they also have to appear in the NEXT (Nation Exit Test) which is equally applicable to all the doctors including Indian pass out doctors. Thus we can say the neet and the nEXT have created a common platform to appear the test and get a license as a medical practitioner for all the doctors whether they have studied in India or abroad.
