How To Test The Purity Of A Meteorite Ring?
Meteorites are the rarest materials that exist on the earth's surface. They come from cosmic space and are known for their stability and incredibly beautiful pattern, thus making your jewelry piece unique and out of this world.
If you are thinking to add a meteorite ring in your jewelry collection then make sure that you order it from a genuine and authentic vendor like The Jewelry Source. We are known for our premium quality and 100% authentic meteorite rings. We have an incredible collection of meteorite rings that will add individuality to your jewelry collection.
A specimen that is thought to be a meteorite and sent to the labs for testing could be a common earth stone and this is termed as meteor-wrong. To avoid this we have different tests that can be performed to know whether the stone used in our jewelry is really a meteorite or not?
Different methods to test the purity of a meteorite sample
Identify the piece of meteorite visually- Meteorites tend to look different from other earthly rocks. They lack the common minerals present in other rocks such as quartz. Meteorites also lack tiny holes ...
... present in the stone known as vesicles. If a suspected meteorite has tiny holes, then it is not a pure meteorite.
The magnet test- Meteorites contain a significant amount of iron and nickel. So we can use a bar of magnet to know whether the suspected stone is a meteorite or not. If the sample of stone is a pure meteorite then it will be attracted to the magnet.
Weight and density test-A pure sample of the meteorite will be heavier and denser than the ordinary earth stone. But remember not all the meteorites are dense. So this is not a sure test of purity.
Regmaglypt texture/thumbprint-Regmaglypts are oval depressions of a peanut size created on the meteorite when its outer layer melts during its journey from the cosmic world. These thumbprints are the unique feature of meteorites.
Nickel test of meteorites- Nickel is present in almost every meteorite. If a suspected meteorite passes the magnet test then we can go further for a nickel test to verify the purity of the meteorite sample.
Exposure to the strong acids-Pure sample of meteorite cannot withstand exposure to strong acids like nitric acid, sulphuric acid. If your meteorite ring comes in contact with strong acids accidentally then it will lead to damage. And if your ring is not damaged then it is not a pure meteorite sample.
