Marrakech Holidays Help You Explore Fascinating Attractions

When you are in Marrakech, one of the largest cities in Morocco, you can have some fabulous cultural experiences. This majestic city is the capital of the Moroccan middle south-western region of Marrakech-Safi and lies to the north of Atlas Mountains' foothills. It was founded by the Almoravid dynasty in the 11th century and grew rapidly over the years, establishing itself as an influential city with regards to religious, cultural, and trade-related activities. The city, of course, witnessed a short period of decline. However, it soon rose to prominence in the early 16th century and has been of great importance ever since.
Among the most important attractions you'll get to explore during your Marrakech holidays are the souks of the city's old neighbourhood, also known as 'medina'. The narrow alleyways of the old quarter would give you some pleasant experiences as you see some rich colours, delightful scents, and unique sounds. While taking a stroll through the maze of the medina, you'll get the chance to enjoy some great shopping opportunities ...
... in the traditional markets called 'souks'. Some of the popular souks in this part of the city are Babouche Souk, El Attarine Souk, Chouari Souk, and Cherratine Souk.
Jemaa-el-Fna is one of the places you must not miss during your winter holidays while visiting the medina. It is a large square located at the entry to the old quarter of Marrakech and is a centre of public life in the city. You can find a number of stalls at this place constantly abuzz with activities. Besides all these stalls selling a wide range of items, you can also find some talented local performers who come up with some entertaining acts. Among them are storytellers, snake charmers, and street musicians. You can also choose to watch the bustling activities of this square from one of the restaurants or rooftop cafes nearby.
While enjoying your winter holidays in this city, you'll also get to explore the Koutoubia Mosque, which is one of the popular landmarks in this part of Morocco. It also has a 70-metre-tall minaret, which can be spotted from greater distances. According to a local legend, the muezzin of this mosque had to be blind, as the minaret was tall enough to overlook the harem of the ruler. A muezzin is a man who calls the faithful for prayer to the mosque. Built during the 12th century, Koutoubia Mosque is considered one of the greatest examples of Almohad architecture.
Marrakech Museum is also worth exploring during your holiday spent in the city. It has been housed in the Dar Menebhi Palace, which was built on the orders of Mehdi Menebhi towards the end of the 19th century. This palace was renovated with great care by the Omar Benjelloun Foundation and converted into a museum in 1997. You'll come across fountains, traditional seating areas, and some intricate works on the tiles while getting around in the museum. Its large atrium has been covered in fabric and glass, while a few elements of the original courtyard have been retained, such as the mosaics and basins.
