How To Remove Fungal Growth From Upholstery

Suppose your guests are sitting on the sofa and suddenly you notice an unpleasant smell coming from it, there can't be anything worse than this!
This is the sign of fungal growth on the upholstery. Let us learn more about this.

REASONS FOR FUNGAL GROWTH:
The fungus can appear anywhere. Mostly, it occurs on upholstery because the conditions of upholstery are best for its growth.

Furnishings are always kept in damp and dark conditions which are perfect for fungal growth.
The fabric of upholstery absorbs moisture which is the primary reason for mould infection.

PROBLEMS CAUSED BY FUNGAL INFECTIONS:
Other than the foul smell, many serious problems can be caused by the infection. Some of these problems may be:

Fabric deterioration: Prolonged fungal infection cash can cause permanent fabric deterioration and you will have to remove the upholstery.
Infections: Fungus, if it comes in contact with skin, can cause skin infections which when ones occur, are tough to get rid off.

HOW TO REMOVE IT?
There are many ways to remove the fungal infection. Some effective methods are.

Method 1: Using normal soap
The materials required for this are-
Sponge or any cloth
Water
Hand soap

Process
Mix half tablespoon of hand soap with sufficient water to make good foam for Upholstery sanitization.
Dip sponge or piece of cloth in it, that it out and squeeze it to take out excess water.
Rub sponge or cloth on the affected area properly. Let the upholstery dry.

NOTE: You can also use rubbing alcohol or white vinegar instead of hand soap.

Method number 2: Using bleaching powder:
This method is useful when the growth area is large. The materials required for this are:
Bleaching powder
Cloth piece
Water

Process:
Mix bleaching powder in water.
Dip the sponge or cloth in the solution, take it out and squeeze to remove excess water.
Rub the affected area properly.

Method number 3: Using hydrogen peroxide
This method is useful when the growth area is small. The materials required for this is a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide solution.

Process:
Apply hydrogen peroxide on the affected area.
After some time, wipe it with a dry cloth.

Method number 4: Using Ammonia
This is a very effective method. The materials required for Professional Upholstery cleaning:
Warm water
2 tsp of Ammonia

Process:
Mix ammonia with enough warm water.
Apply it to the affected area.

NOTE:
At the end of each method, let the upholstery dry under sunlight/ fan. Prefer sunlight as it is very effective.
Don’t leave it under direct sunlight for long; it can damage the colour of the upholstery.

Wear mask, if possible.

DOS AND DON’TS

Apply fungicide regularly to prevent fungal infection.
Place a humidifier or use a fan to increase air circulation and reduce moisture, as moisture is the prime factor for the fungal attack.
Replace the upholstered furniture if it has been damaged significantly by mould.
Vacuum upholstery regularly to prevent fungal growth.
