If you've ever heard of Feng Shui, then you'll be familiar with the idea that the layout of a room can impact how you feel and how you relax in that space. Putting something in just the wrong position – even by a couple of millimeters – can make you feel on edge and distracted even though there's hardly a noticeable difference.

FengShui is an interesting concept then, but it's important to remember that's it's still based on some esoteric ideas and it's fully supported by the science. What makes more sense often then is to simply look at what we know of human psychology, and at how our decors and home layouts affect us on that level.

Let's take a look at the interesting interplay between psychology and the space around us and at how you can ensure that your rooms are relaxing, comforting and great for productivity.

Colour

Colours have long been known to affect our psychology. And it's interesting to see how different hues can impact us in different ways.

For instance, the colour red is associated with passion, anger, romance and violence. Simply being in its presence has shown to increase ...
... our heart rates. Thus you should largely avoid that colour in your decorating.

The colours that tend to get us to relax more, on the other hand, are usually those which we associate with nature and resources (which makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint). Thus we tend to like greens, blues and light colours which help us to reduce our heartbeat. Having a plant in view can achieve this effect even more.

Light

One of the biggest ways to make your space better for you from a psychological standpoint is to increase the natural light getting into the room. This can further make the space feel more natural, but at the same time, it actually triggers the release of happiness hormones in the brain – acting as a natural mood-booster. Getting light into your room through roof skylights or through big bay windows can help you accomplish this.

Note that if you want a room to be 'cozy' then you should aim to create a warmer coloured light that dances and flickers and that will create long, drawn shadows. Fireplaces are ideal for this end.

Alignment and Symmetry

What's really interesting though is the way that humans tend to prefer things that line up and that are symmetrical. This is why having picture unevenly on the wall, or a table that's just in your way, can really make you feel antsy and on-edge.

The reason for this is debated to an extent but is likely founded on the way our brain organizes and works through information. We like to make connections and find patterns and this helps us to keep track of lots of complex ideas. By assigning an order to the world we can better keep track of it and conceptualize it. So it makes sense that we prefer our furniture to be straight against the wall and our cutlery to be exactly parallel on the table mat.
